Description

New from Rawlings for the year The Gamer Youth Pro Taper series is the perfect choice for any younger athlete who is transitioning out of coach pitch and wants a pro-style baseball glove without having to use an adult glove. Constructed with a smaller hand opening and lowered finger stalls, the Youth Pro Taper is the perfect solution for smaller hands that haven't become full grown. Each glove is created with the newly developed, soft, full-grain leather shell that breaks in extremely quick while still maintaining quality and shape. This series, made after authentic professional patterns, displays nothing but the best in terms of features and materials. Leather reinforced palm and finger back linings increase protection so that worrying about stinging in the hands is a thing of the past. All of this is made possible by the Tennessee tanning rawhide leather laces that bring it all together and provide additional strength, structure, and long lasting durability. Rawlings: The Mark of a Pro!

This Rawlings Gamer Youth Pro Taper First Base Mitt: GFM16B features a 12.00 inch pattern, a pro H-web, and is the perfect choice for a first baseman who is just starting out. Pros: This glove looks fantastic. Soft leather, so it breaks in easily. But, the glove has good structure and will not become a sloppy mess over time. Rawlings makes the best gloves and this is no exception. My 10 year old used the glove right out of the box. Short break in period. Certainly recommend this glove

Cons: None

Goraman

Pros: This is not a good mitt,IT'S A GREAT MITT.Nice fit for smaller hands, well structured.Perfect balance of softer leather but still not floppy or flimsy.Rawlings really hit a home run with this mitt! It is also very reasonably priced, this was not the first one we tried but it will be the keeper for sure. My 8 year old could close down on a clean catch right out of the box.You will not be disappointed in the quality.

Cons: None at all.

Is this glove the replacement for the discontinued GFMPT? Coach Daddy
Yes, the 2017 Rawlings Gamer Youth Pro Taper 12" First Base Mitt: GFM16B is the newest version of the Rawlings Gamer Pro Taper Series: GFMPT.
Angelique
Is this the newest version of the GG Gamer Series? If not, how does this compare to the GG Gamer series? E
Yes, this 2017 Rawlings Gamer Youth Pro Taper 12" First Base Mitt (GFM16B) is going to be the same as the GG Gamer series.
Carter
Would this glove be too big for my 7 yr old son? Seth
The 2017 Rawlings Gamer Youth Pro Taper 12" First Base Mitt: GFM16B features a 12.00 inch pattern and for most players that are 7 years old we would recommend either a 11.50 or 11.75 inch pattern. One could certainly go with a 12.00 inch pattern if that is their personal preference. With our 100 day guarantee one can rest assured they will not get stuck with a 1B mitt that is not the right fit.
Cameron
My granddaughter is 12 years old and looking for a youth fastpitch 1B mitt. What would you recommend for her? Coach PaPa
Even though this 2017 Rawlings Gamer Youth Pro Taper 12" First Base Mitt (GFM16B) is technically called a baseball mitt, I think the 12.00" length and the snug fitting on the glove should work well for your fastpitch player at 12 years old. I would recommend giving it a try. If it doesn't work, you would have the 100 day guarantee to return it back to us even if it was used.
Ben
My son is just turning 8 in June and if I bought this mitt would it be too big? If not, how many years could he use it before it's too small? chief
This glove should be fine for an 8 year old. Unfortunately it's hard to say when he will grow out of it, because it's not easy to predict how fast a child will grow. If I had to guess, I'd say it should be fine for 2-3 years.

My daughter has just turned 11 and moves to the twelve inch softball for the fall fastpitch twelve and under season. This appears to have everything we want for her. Will this baseball glove work well for her using the new 12" softball? Concerned Father
We would recommend a fastpitch glove for fastpitch softball, although this could certainly work. We do have a 100 day return policy on all our gloves, so if it turns out to not work for you feel free to return it within the 100 days from the date of purchase.

Hi I noticed at Rawlings.com they offered engraving on their gloves. Is this an option you guys offer? Thanks Scottyb
Yes, at JustBallGloves.com we feature the Rawlings Custom Glove Builder which allows you to create a custom glove and select the embroidery and customization that you prefer. You can find the Rawlings Custom Glove Builder at http://www.justballgloves.com/product/rawlings-custom-glove/22318/.

I have a 9 yr old that's big for his age, one of the biggest kids on his team, and he's been playing first base for a while now as well as pitching. This year he was drafted and is moving up to majors, and I would like to get him a dedicated first base glove. Will this glove be too big for him? rhfgsxr7
Typically for a 9 year old player we would recommend getting a 1B around 11.50-11.75 inches in design. The 2017 Rawlings Gamer Youth Pro Taper 12" First Base Mitt: GFM16B will feature a 12 inch pattern and can certainly be used by a 9 year old who is a bigger kid for this age. With any 1B mitt, it all comes down to what each player is comfortable using with regards to size.
Cameron
Would you suggest the Gamer or the Akadema for a big 8 year old? mason
For a bigger 8 year old player, I would recommend going with this 2017 Rawlings Gamer Youth Pro Taper 12" First Base Mitt (GFM16B) over the Akadema Prodigy Series (AHC94-12 Youth First Base Mitt) since this Gamer is slightly longer at 11.5".
Ben
Can this glove be customized with my child's name and number? Mike
Unfortunately I don't believe Rawlings offers this glove in a customizable format. You could try contacting them directly for more information.

My son is 8 yrs old and plays both rec and travel ball. He plays a significant amount of games per year. I'm interested in buying him a new first base mitt. Would you recommend the Rawlings Gamer Youth Pro Taper 12" 1st Base Mitt? MFerny
At your player's age, it would be hard to suggest a better first base mitt than the 2017 Rawlings Gamer Youth Pro Taper 12" First Base Mitt: GFM16B. It features a snug fit for a young player, and the overall quality of the glove would be hard to beat in another youth model.
Logan
My son is a big 11 year old - 5'2", 115 lbs and would like his first first base glove. Is this 12" glove better option than the Rawlings Sandlot 12.5"? He plays Little League and travel ball. Babe
Typically, for an 11 year old player we would recommend getting a 1B mitt in a 12.00 inch pattern. A mitt such as the 2017 Rawlings Gamer Youth Pro Taper 12" First Base Mitt: GFM16B would thus be an ideal fit. Whether to use a 12.00 inch pattern or a 12.50 like the Rawlings Sandlot Series 12.5" First Base Mitt: SFM18 will come down to personal preference as far as what size feels comfortable to the player. With that being said, the Rawlings Sandlot Series 12.5" First Base Mitt: SFM18 will have more of an adult fit with relationship to the wrist opening. This may benefit a bigger 11 year old player compared to the youth pro taper fit of the Rawlings Gamer.
Cameron
My son is about to turn 10 and is growing fast. Should I bump him up to the 12.5" mitt to allow room for him to grow or is that too big? Rich
Typically, we find that players between the ages of 10 and 13 are comfortable with a 12" first base mitt. This 2017 Rawlings Gamer Youth Pro Taper 12" First Base Mitt (GFM16B) will feature a tighter wrist opening and slimmer finger stalls that works well for players your son's age. Although I think your player would be comfortable with this glove, a 12.50" would likely work for him, as long as you found a model with a similar youth fit.

About the Brand

Rawlings is a major manufacturer of competitive team sports equipment and apparel for baseball, basketball, and football, as well as licensed MLB, NFL, and NCAA retail products. Rawlings is a major supplier to professional, collegiate, interscholastic, and amateur organizations worldwide, including the Official Baseball Supplier to Major League Baseball.

The first real innovation in glove making occurred in 1912 when Rawlings Sporting Goods Company introduced the "Sure Catch" glove, which was "endorsed by leading players all over the country." The Sure Catch was a one-piece glove with sewn-in finger channels and looked better suited for a duck's foot than a man's hand. Catchers' mitts used at the time were large and bulky with a single leather thong passing for a web.

In 1920, Bill Doak, a journeyman pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, approached Rawlings with an idea for improving the baseball glove from a mere protective device to a genuine aid in fielding. The "Bill Doak" model was so revolutionary that it stayed in Rawlings' line until 1953. Its key feature was a multi-thong web laced into the first finger and thumb, which created for the first time in baseball's young life, a natural pocket.

In 1925, Rawlings unveiled a three-fingered fielder's glove, and ten years later improved the Bill Doak model with a two-piece leather web. At the same time, the "T" web became a rage for first basemen's mitts. The pocket underwent a pronounced change in 1941 when the Trapper Mitt, also known as the Claw, appeared. The "Deep Well" pocket was so unique that Rawlings quickly patented it. The design was improved in 1950 by adding a leather piece across the top. Another significant creation occurred in 1948 with the three-fingered Playmaker. A five-fingered fielder's model, with all fingers laced together, provided greater pocket control.

The six-fingered Trap-Eze evolved in the 1960's. In more recent years, Rawlings produced the Fastback design, which gives a glove a snugger fit, greater extension, and overall control. The Holdster is a slot through which a finger can be extended for additional protection from impacts on the pocket. Then, there is the Edge-U-Cated Heel with its extended U-shaped lacing and the Pro H Web and much-copied Basket Web.

Some of Rawlings's more recent glove innovations also include the unique Spin-Stopper design which reduces ball spin when the ball hits the glove, and the Cantilever glove design feature that provides a cushioned area between the hand and the glove's palm area. In all, Rawlings has produced and patented more functionally innovative glove features and designs than that of any other glove manufacturer. The result is that the modern baseball glove is much larger, more comfortable, better padded, and made to last far longer than its ancestors. It is not uncommon to see today's Major League players wearing the same Rawlings glove they wore during their college playing days. In fact, Rawlings is the #1 glove in the major leagues. Rawlings maintains about 65 models of baseball and softball mitts and gloves in its line. The prototypes of virtually all of them have been field-tested by professionals before entering a sporting goods dealer's inventory.
