Pros: Unfortunately I bought this glove in '07 when it was new to the market and the price was $140. But setting that aside I would say this glove is a great option at the current price point. Its different than anything else you will find. Fast break in.

Cons: It seems to have very little padding. I had to buy a lace in palm pad just to ease up on the sting. Without one I was leaving the field with a swollen index finger even with it out of the open back. It seems to be really floppy and the felt or padding used on the thumb and toe areas is not very stiff, so digging those low throws out can be a challenge if not caught directly in the pocket. I would say this would be a good glove for a beginner.

Pros: Glove was easy to break in. My son was using it in games after about three weeks. I like the brass bolsters around the glove as they will prevent the lacing from tearing the leather. My son (who is eleven) says the glove looks sweet!! I see no reason why he wouldn't be able to use this glove all the way through teener ball, other than outgrowing it.

Cons: None at this point

Pros: Beautiful glove with well formed pocket, right out of the box. Leather is well oiled and glove is firm and is padded to match modern gloves. Looks wonderful and feels great. 12.5'' is hardball only. Even while new and still stiff it traps the ball well.

Cons: None really. Still breaking it in. "Ready to play" means ready to play catch in the yard, not ready for the field.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Spalding Vintage Series: 08540 First Base Mitt? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

I have an old Spalding EZ Flex first baseman's mitt, #1385, that my Dad gave me. I don't know what year it was made - 40's I'm guessing. Is there a way to find out? Sal
I was unable to dig up any exact information, but there is a website, vintageballgloves.net, that may be able to provide more details. Or, Spalding may be able to help, their phone number is, 1-631-234-2800. Good Luck!

I want this glove for my right handed thrower son.Are you going to get it in? dmac
This particular model is on "closeout" status so I do not anticipate more of gloves to arrive in stock. Generally, a "closeout" status indicates no more production.
Jeff
how stiff is this glove. My son is 11 and just wandering . I dont want it to take all season to break it in. Mike
The 08540 comes pre treated and is a soft grain leather. It is fairly game ready. It will not be difficult to break in.

I want to order this glove for my 9 year old son. Do you think it this is the right size for his age? Vince
For 9 and 10 year olds, a 12 inch first base mitt is generally recommended. However, a 12.5 inch mitt would probably be manageable for him and would give him plenty of room to grow into.

I'm an adult and I have pretty big hands. Will this glove accomodate me? ScottyJ
Spalding's Vintage Series gloves fit pretty true to size and I don't think you should have any problems with it. Keep in mind, even if the glove feels uncomfortable at first, the more you use it and the more broken-in it becomes the better it will fit and the better it will fell.

About the Brand

Spalding was founded in 1876 by Boston Red Stockings pitcher A.G. Spalding. Spalding has been a leader of innovation and quality in sporting goods ever since. Spalding has been credited with developing the very first official baseball, basketball, golf ball and football.

A.G. Spalding was a very prominent and influential figure in baseball back in the early days of the game. He played for the Boston Red Stockings and in 1876 he left to play for the Chicago White Stockings, which would later become known as the Chicago Cubs. Spalding helped the White Stocking win the 1876 Inaugural National League Title. After the start of the following season Spalding retired from his playing days to become a full time businessman and team president for the White Stockings.

With an $800 loan from his mother Al Spalding opened up his own sporting goods company, which got its start by selling baseballs. Spalding’s baseballs became The Official Baseball of the National League, which gave him great advertising and exposure and people started to know Spalding Sporting Goods as quality products. As his company expanded Spalding started expanding into numerous outdoor activities and began developing golf clubs, tennis rackets, basketballs, and any other equipment needed for popular athletics at the time. Spalding sporting goods are now official products for many professional sports leagues and college conferences and amateur leagues.
