First Basemen Glove Parent: Father Parent

Pros: Glove arrived as expected with it being mostly broken in and game ready for my 8-year old son. By Spring next year it should be well broken in and really easy to close for him. It has a smaller opening hand opening but I can also use it to help break it in.

Cons: More color choices would be nice but black and cherry is still good looking.

Good Glove Murphy Coach

Pros: Glove came almost ready to use as advertised. Put minimal work into it to get it ready. Quality leather and smaller youth specific hand socket and finger stalls are great.

Cons: The wrist opening didn’t match up with the youth fee. It was to large. I had to buy a needle kit snd re-lace it to the smaller holes to close it up for my 11 year old. The adjustable strap like other Rawlings models would have made this glove perfect for youth players.

Is this a youth model?
Patrick
The Rawlings R9 Series 12.5" First Base Mitt: R9FM18BSG is more of an ideal fit for a player between 12-16 years of age.
Cameron
I am a bit confused about the sizing for the R9 gloves. Your answer to the above question suggests this glove for ages 12-16. But the product information on the page suggests 8-14. So how does the recommend ages for these gloves work out?
Rob
Recommending a glove for an age is a really tough proposition. Age does not always indicate necessary size because player's hands will vary from player to player. The Rawlings R9 Series 12.5" First Base Mitt: R9FM18BSG does have a smaller fit on the wrist opening for better control by a player with smaller hands.
Tyler
How does the R9 compare to the Rawlings Sandlot 12.5" First Base Glove?
Kelly
The Rawlings R9 Series 12.5" First Base Mitt: R9FM18BSG will feel very similar to the Rawlings Sandlot 12.5'', the biggest difference will be the reinforced thumb loop on the Rawlings R9 Series 12.5" First Base Mitt: R9FM18BSG compared to the Rawlings Sandlot. The leather and fit of both of the gloves will be almost identical.
Max
My son has started playing 1st base this past season. He is 13 yrs old. At Babe Ruth level. He is 5'2" and 100 lbs. Is there a big difference between a 12" and a 12.5" first base glove? Would you recommend a size between the two?
Jonah
I think that your player will be able to tell the difference between a 12" length mitt and 12.5" length mitt. That being said, I think at 13 years, he would be ready to take on the 12.5" length of this Rawlings R9 Series 12.5" First Base Mitt (R9FM18BSG). This R9 Series has a fitting to it that is for a player between a youth sized mitt and an adult sized mitt. That fitting should do well for your player at 13 years.
Ben
Is this just for 12 year old or will it fit an adult as I see pro players using 12.5 I always thought 13 inch were for softball
Peter
The Rawlings R9 Series 12.5" First Base Mitt: R9FM18BSG will feature shorter finger stalls and smaller wrist opening for older youth hands. The size of the glove 12.5" does not equate to how it fits the hand. This particular model is made for youth players in mind. If you have standard adult hand size, this glove would not be the best option for you. The Rawlings Player Preferred 12.5" First Base Mitt: PFBDCT model will fit an adult's hand better.
Daveron
In the features it says 20% break-in factory and 80% break-in player but in the description it says 80% break-in factory and 20% break-in player, so which is it?
Dean
Apologies if we worded it oddly, but the line "Break-In: 20% Player, 80% Factory" that is listed under the "Features" section means that the manufacturer has done roughly 80% of the break in required. This is also mentioned in the description with this line here: "This series features soft, durable all-leather shells with an 80% factory break-in for a game ready feel".

About the Brand

Rawlings is a major manufacturer of competitive team sports equipment and apparel for baseball, basketball, and football, as well as licensed MLB, NFL, and NCAA retail products. Rawlings is a major supplier to professional, collegiate, interscholastic and amateur organizations worldwide, including the Official Baseball Supplier to Major League Baseball.

The first real innovation in glove making occurred in 1912 when Rawlings Sporting Goods Company introduced the "Sure Catch" glove, which was "endorsed by leading players all over the country." The Sure Catch was a one-piece glove with sewn-in finger channels and looked better suited for a duck's foot than a man's hand. Catchers' mitts used at the time were large and bulky with a single leather thong passing for a web.

In 1920, Bill Doak, a journeyman pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, approached Rawlings with an idea for improving the baseball glove from a mere protective device to a genuine aid in fielding. The "Bill Doak" model was so revolutionary that it stayed in Rawlings' line until 1953. Its key feature was a multi-thong web laced into the first finger and thumb, which created for the first time in baseball's young life, a natural pocket.

In 1925, Rawlings unveiled a three-fingered fielder's glove, and ten years later improved the Bill Doak model with a two-piece leather web. At the same time, the "T" web became a rage for first basemen's mitts. The pocket underwent a pronounced change in 1941 when the Trapper Mitt, also known as the Claw, appeared. The "Deep Well" pocket was so unique that Rawlings quickly patented it. The design was improved in 1950 by adding a leather piece across the top. Another significant creation occurred in 1948 with the three-fingered Playmaker. A five-fingered fielder's model, with all fingers laced together, provided greater pocket control.

The six-fingered Trap-Eze evolved in the 1960's. In more recent years, Rawlings produced the Fastback design, which gives a glove a snugger fit, greater extension, and overall control. The Holdster is a slot through which a finger can be extended for additional protection from impacts on the pocket. Then, there is the Edge-U-Cated Heel with its extended U-shaped lacing and the Pro H Web and much-copied Basket Web.

Some of Rawlings more recent glove innovations also include the unique Spin-Stopper design which reduces ball spin when the ball hits the glove, and the Cantilever glove design feature that provides a cushioned area between the hand and the glove's palm area. In all, Rawlings has produced and patented more functionally innovative glove features and designs than that of any other glove manufacturer. The result is that the modern baseball glove is much larger, more comfortable, better padded and made to last far longer than its ancestors. It is not uncommon to see today's Major League players wearing the same Rawlings' glove they wore during their college playing days. In fact, Rawlings is the #1 glove in the major leagues. Rawlings maintains about 65 models of baseball and softball mitts and gloves in its line. The prototypes of virtually all of them have been field tested by professionals before entering a sporting goods dealer's inventory.
