Rawlings R9 -10 year old Mike Mullen Parent

Pros: They glove leather is soft and after an hour or so of working the glove it is quite a gamer already. Have the glove closing from thumb to pinky and my son is able to close it with ease. I am comfortable with him using in a game already. Great shape and deep pocket. I am highly impressed. We are still working his infielders glove - Mark of a Pro that uses Heart of the Hide Leather. It is close, but still needs quite a bit more time to be supple and soft. Still on the stuff side after a couple of months.

Cons: Nine that I can see. I think the big question will be how long will it last. The stitches aren’t what you see on a high end glove and since the glove started soft already, will it turn into a dishrag. I suspect it will last many years. I bought this glove to get him from 10 to maybe 13-14 when we might upgrade to an adult size glove. This has youth taper. That said, the glove feels good on my hand. A little snug but with use I am sure it would be useable for an adult sized hand too.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Rawlings R9 Series 12" Youth Baseball Glove: R9YPT6-6B? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

Can this be used as an adult glove? Tony
The Rawlings R9 Series 12" Youth Baseball Glove: R9YPT6-6B would not work well as an adult glove. The wrist opening and finger stalls are designed for a youth hand.
Cameron
Is this a good glove for a 13 year old? Gary
Yes, typically the 12-inch pattern on the Rawlings R9 Series 12" Youth Baseball Glove: R9YPT6-6B would make it a good fit for a 13 year old.
Dani
Do you price match? Russell Gregory
Yes, we do offer price matching. You can find our price match policy here: https://www.justballgloves.com/customer-service/price-match/
Kyle J.
Would this be a good size for a 9U player? Jason
The Rawlings R9 Series 12" Youth Baseball Glove: R9YPT6-6B would be a great option for a nine and under player looking to play outfield.
Max
Could a 14 year old outfielder use this glove? Would the inside be too small? Ken Williams
For a 14 year old player, this Rawlings R9 Series 12" Youth Baseball Glove (R9YPT6-6B) will be too small in its fitting for use. If you wanted a 12", R9 mitt to use for a 14 year old, I would check out the Rawlings R9 Series 12" Baseball Glove (R9206-9BSG).
Ben
My son is 10 but on the smaller side. Would the 12" be to large of a glove? He plays primarily outfield and 1st base. Shawn
With the player specs listed, the Rawlings R9 Series 12" Youth Baseball Glove: R9YPT6-6B would be a great option for the player. It is an intermediate youth model for players that need high quality gloves, but still have smaller hands.
Daveron
Could this be used by a 15 year old high school player? Julie
The Rawlings R9 Series 12" Youth Baseball Glove: R9YPT6-6B is not likely to fit well on a 15 year old player's hand.
Cameron
My son is 8 years old. He has been using an R9 11.25 inch glove and I ordered R9 12 inch 1st base mitt. I am thinking about buying a 12 inch outfielder glove again because I want him to have experience all over the field with the right equipment. But I am worrying that using 3 gloves is too much for him to handle and a 12 inch glove is too big for his hand. What is your recommendation? Hoil Jang
For an 8 year old player, we believe that the Rawlings R9 Series 12" Youth Baseball Glove: R9YPT6-6B would be too big. For someone of his age, a better size glove to consider using across the diamond, whether it be infield or OF play, would be an 11.25 inch glove. One such example to consider would be the Rawlings R9 Series 11.25" Youth Baseball Glove: R9YPT2-2B.
Cameron
Can this be used for 10U softball? Carlos
Yes, the Rawlings R9 Series 12" Youth Baseball Glove: R9YPT6-6B can be used in 10U softball.
Cameron
What is the difference between the open webbing and the closed webbing on the Rawlings glove between the thumb and fore finger? Anne... grandma who doesn't know these things
From a size standpoint, there is no difference between the Rawlings R9 Series 12" Youth Baseball Glove: R9YPT6-6B and the Rawlings R9 12" Baseball Glove: R9206-9BG. The Rawlings R9 12" Baseball Glove: R9206-9BG is a better option for a pitcher and the hand setting on this glove will be bigger than the youth pro taper fit (smaller wrist opening & finger stalls) that is featured on the Rawlings R9 Series 12" Youth Baseball Glove: R9YPT6-6B.
Cameron
I play second base in a slow pitch softball league and I am a female with very small wrists. Would this glove be a good fit? Gina
The Rawlings R9 Series 12" Youth Baseball Glove: R9YPT6-6B will feature the youth pro taper fit (smaller wrist opening and finger stalls) so this glove could certainly make a great option for a female player in slowpitch softball.
Cameron
Can it fit a 16 year old? Alejandro Jimenez
The Rawlings R9 Series 12" Youth Baseball Glove: R9YPT6-6B features the youth pro taper fit and would thus not likely be a great fit for a 16 year old player.
Cameron
What is the difference between the Rawlings R9 and the Rawlings Gold Glove series? Pretty close in price point. RJ
The R9 series replaced the Gold Glove youth series that Rawlings use to make. The Rawlings R9 Series 12" Youth Baseball Glove: R9YPT6-6B would be comparable to the prior Gold Glove youth models.

About the Brand

Rawlings is a major manufacturer of competitive team sports equipment and apparel for baseball, basketball, and football, as well as licensed MLB, NFL, and NCAA retail products. Rawlings is a major supplier to professional, collegiate, interscholastic, and amateur organizations worldwide, including the Official Baseball Supplier to Major League Baseball.

The first real innovation in glove making occurred in 1912 when Rawlings Sporting Goods Company introduced the "Sure Catch" glove, which was "endorsed by leading players all over the country." The Sure Catch was a one-piece glove with sewn-in finger channels and looked better suited for a duck's foot than a man's hand. Catchers' mitts used at the time were large and bulky with a single leather thong passing for a web.

In 1920, Bill Doak, a journeyman pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, approached Rawlings with an idea for improving the baseball glove from a mere protective device to a genuine aid in fielding. The "Bill Doak" model was so revolutionary that it stayed in Rawlings' line until 1953. Its key feature was a multi-thong web laced into the first finger and thumb, which created for the first time in baseball's young life, a natural pocket.

In 1925, Rawlings unveiled a three-fingered fielder's glove, and ten years later improved the Bill Doak model with a two-piece leather web. At the same time, the "T" web became a rage for first basemen's mitts. The pocket underwent a pronounced change in 1941 when the Trapper Mitt, also known as the Claw, appeared. The "Deep Well" pocket was so unique that Rawlings quickly patented it. The design was improved in 1950 by adding a leather piece across the top. Another significant creation occurred in 1948 with the three-fingered Playmaker. A five-fingered fielder's model, with all fingers laced together, provided greater pocket control.

The six-fingered Trap-Eze evolved in the 1960's. In more recent years, Rawlings produced the Fastback design, which gives a glove a snugger fit, greater extension, and overall control. The Holdster is a slot through which a finger can be extended for additional protection from impacts on the pocket. Then, there is the Edge-U-Cated Heel with its extended U-shaped lacing and the Pro H Web and much-copied Basket Web.

Some of Rawlings's more recent glove innovations also include the unique Spin-Stopper design which reduces ball spin when the ball hits the glove, and the Cantilever glove design feature that provides a cushioned area between the hand and the glove's palm area. In all, Rawlings has produced and patented more functionally innovative glove features and designs than that of any other glove manufacturer. The result is that the modern baseball glove is much larger, more comfortable, better padded, and made to last far longer than its ancestors. It is not uncommon to see today's Major League players wearing the same Rawlings glove they wore during their college playing days. In fact, Rawlings is the #1 glove in the major leagues. Rawlings maintains about 65 models of baseball and softball mitts and gloves in its line. The prototypes of virtually all of them have been field-tested by professionals before entering a sporting goods dealer's inventory.
