Your 7 year old could most likely benefit going up to an 11" model of the Wilson A500. The leather used in the Wilson A500 is full grain leather.

The Wilson A500 Series has a top grain leather shell and the Wilson A450 has an all-leather shell. The A500 has a more durable leather but performance will be very similar.

I purchased a Wilson A500 Game Soft Series baseball mitt for my grandson. My husband says it's no good due to the way the thumb is stitched to the palm. He says it sticks up and interferes with the pocket. Maybe that's why it's discontinued. What is your opinion? dlr57
