Pros: Good feel and quality. Was large enough to fit my 14 yr. old daughter's large hand. Not super soft, but I think it will last longer than the really soft gloves. Our last glove was a Glove Smith that lasted about 5 years of very hard use 9 months out of each year. It was super stiff and hard when I got it. She wanted something different this time and as a left handed catcher was limited on choices. I think this was a good choice.

Cons: LIttle longer break in time.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Mizuno MVP Prime Series: GXS53 Fastpitch Catcher's Mitt? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

I am an adult that needs a catchers glove so I can catch for my daughter who uses a 12in softball. What size glove should I get? Vicky
Hi Vicky. This would actually be an excellent option for you. If you're a parent or coach and not accustomed to catching fastpitch softball, I'd go with a larger size mitt like this one.
Brett
My daughter is 11 and has one year of catching under her belt. What circumference of mitt is best for this age? Scott
For your daughter's age group, a 32 to 33 inch fastpitch catcher's mitt is recommended. A lot of it comes down to personal preference, but I wouldn't go any larger than a 33 or 33.5 inch mitt.
Mark
how easy to break in and how long should it last, should you wear a batting glove with it? Gus
This is a pretty high-quality glove but it shouldn't take longer than a few sessions of catch before it's ready. It has the capabilities to last longer than two seasons, but durability will vary. Wearing a batting glove is completely based on your personal preference.
Brett
Can you tell me the difference between prime series GXS53 and GXS31. My daughter is a catcher High School catcher. Also How do you pick the size of the mitt? Terri
Both are great gloves, but the GXS31 is made from a slighly higher quality leather. Sizing really comes down to personal preference, and there's really no way to measure the player to determine the correct size glove. Most High School fastpitch catcher's will use a mitt between 33 and 34.5 inches.
Jeff
I am a high school catcher and my current mitt is too warn out to be of any use anymore, i have an average sized had but a small wrist. Will this glove be to large for me? My pitcher has about a 65 mph fastball, will it be padded enough also? Bethany
Well, the average size catcher's mitt for a high school fastpitch softball player is between 33 and 34 inches. At 34.5 inches, this is one of the larger fastpitch mitts available but it is designed to fit a smaller hand of a female fastpitch player and I think it will fit your hand just fine. It also has an adjustable wrist strap and features above average padding.
John
I just bought this glove and I am trying to break it in, I used Nokona conditioning oil to break it in but it is a very thick substance. I was wondering how I can get it off my glove without causing damage. Is hot water and soap okay to use? Dilly Bear
Once a glove has been treated and it's sat for a considerable amount of time and soaked into the leather, there is really no way to remove it. I definitely wouldn't recommend soaking a glove in water and soap, but you can wipe the glove down with a cloth that has been dampened with water and soap. This may help to remove any excess oil that has built up on the exterior of the glove.
Brett
Love to get suggestions on breaking in this mizuno glove well - aside from 'using' it.we have glove oil, etc. Having difficulty breaking this glove in - despite use, oil and working on it, it still remains very stiff Pac10
This is a great link that we have that helps provide information about breaking in a glove; http://www.justballgloves.com/glove-resource-guide/breaking-in-a-glove/
Brett
I tried on this glove at 34" and i was barely able to squeeze my hand in. (I'm a 40 yr old Dad looking for something with more padding to catch my 10 yr old fast pitch softball). is there much a difference moving up to the 34.5"? jzappola
Fastpitch gloves are designed to fit the smaller hand of a female and most adult males with average size hands or larger will probably find them a bit uncomfortable. Most males who catch players in female fastpitch softball use a regular baseball fielders glove (around 13" or a baseball firstbase mitt around 13" as well.

LOOKING FOR A GOOD CATCHERS GLOVE FOR MY 9YR OLD DAUGHTER SHE PLAYS 10U SOFTBALL DIVISION- SHE IS SMALL AND I NEED TO KNOW WOULD THIS GLOVE SUITE HER SMALL HAND??? HOW DOES THIS GLOVE DIFFER IN SIZE COMPARED TO A REG GLOVE? CAROLINA
At 34 inches, this mitt would be way too big for a 9 year old. This size is more common among High School and College age players. For a 9 year old, a mitt between 31 or 32 inches (max) would be a better option.
Tyler
My daughter catchers for 12u fastpitch softball team and uses her regular glove now. She is wanting to start using a catchers glove. would this be the right fit for her? tdog20
A 34 inch mitt like the GXS53 is more common among advanced High School players and players at the collegiate level. A player around 12 years old will be better suited with a mitt between 32 and 33 inches.
Tyler
my dd is a smaller 12 year old girl is this glove to big for her? jim
A 34" mitt like the Mizuno MVP Prime Series: GXS53 is more common among high school and college level players. A 33" model is better suited for a 12-13 year old.
Tyler
she has a Gxs53 presently that is a bit worn. She loves it, works well. Plays u 16. Since we are going to purchase a new one would the Gxs31 be an up grade for her or should we stick with what we have?? allie cat
If you want a mitt that is a little more durable, the Mizuno Classic Fastpitch Series: GXS31 would be recommended as it's made with a higher quality, more durable leather. So, yes, the GXS31 would be an upgrade over the GXS53.
Tyler
Play in an over 65 league. 5'6,140lbs. Old but we hustle. Would this mit meet my needs? It's a slowpitch league. Bill
The Mizuno MVP Prime Series: GXS53 Fastpitch Catcher's Mitt is a female fastpitch softball glove designed to fit the smaller hand of a female player. Most men will find this glove too tight, but if you have below average size hands for a male, then this mitt would be a good option for you.
Tyler
Which glove has a deeper pocket? GXS57 or GXS53? Jake
The Mizuno MVP Prime Series: GXS53 Fastpitch Catcher's Mitt has a slightly deeper pocket than the Mizuno MVP Fastpitch Series: GXS57 Catcher's Mitt.
Kara
Between the GXS53 and GXS57 which will hold a 12" ball the best? kelvin
Both, the Mizuno MVP Prime GXS53 and the Mizuno MVP GXS57 are designed for the 12" softballs. The difference between the two is that the MVP Prime will have a smoother finish and won't be as oiled as the regular MVP.
John
My daughter is turning 14 in a couple of months. She catches on a very competitive 14U/16U team. She is about 5 ft and about 100 lbs. Would this glove be good for her and will it last a few years without her outgrowing it? Is 34" the right size? Thanks! JV
The Mizuno MVP Prime Series: GXS53 Fastpitch Catcher's Mitt is too large for her age and size. We recommend a 33" glove.
Kara
Needing a glove for my 10 year old. Her hands are probably the size of a typical 12-13 yr old and she's pretty strong. Would this be a good choice or do you have other suggestions? RenMom
The Mizuno MVP Prime Series (GXS53) is too large for a ten year old player. Typically a 34.00" glove is recommended for a high school player. We recommend the Mizuno Prospect Fastpitch Series (GXS101).
Kara
My daughter loves her GXS53 model glove, but it's starting to show its age. What Mizuno model replaces this version (she prefers the closed pocket)? Is it the GXS50PF2, or something else? Thank you. Dan
Yes, the GXS50PF2 is very similar to the GXS53 model and would work well for you if you liked the GXS53.
