Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Rawlings Renegade 12.5" Baseball First Base Mitt: RFBMB? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

What is the difference between the RFBMB and the RFBRB models? Howie
The main difference between the Rawlings Renegade 12.5" First Base Mitt: RFBMB and the Rawlings Renegade 12.5" First Base Mitt: RFBRB is the hinge on the left side of the mitt. This will allow the Rawlings Renegade 12.5" First Base Mitt: RFBMB to form a different pocket and close more thumb to ring finger.
Cameron
The description mentions adult and youth patterns for this model? Which one is this? If it is a youth model, does it have a narrower opening? Ken
The Rawlings Renegade 12.5" First Base Mitt: RFBMB will be a youth fit and will have a more narrow opening to squeeze a youth players hand.
Max
Will this lefty's 1B suitable for a 12 year old? Steve
The Rawlings Renegade 12.5" First Base Mitt: RFBMB is intended for older teen and adult players. We see players making the jump to adult gloves between 12-14 years of age. Depending on your player's hand strength, you may need a little more time for breaking it in.
Daveron
Which glove has the deeper pocket, this or the Mizuno Prospect GXF102? My son has the Mizuno GXF102 (12 1/2 inch) and it seems kind of small with a small pocket. He has a Wilson A500 12 1/2 inch that is noticeable bigger. Tony
The Rawlings Renegade 12.5" First Base Mitt: RFBMB will have a slightly bigger pocket.
Tori
What are the differences between the Renegade and R9 series gloves? John H
The Rawlings Renegade 12.5" First Base Mitt: RFBMB and the R9 series are pretty similar and both designed for youth players. The R9 series will be made entirely of leather and will be slightly more durable.
Tori
Is this a youth mitt? Michael Duncan
The Rawlings Renegade 12.5" First Base Mitt (RFBMB) is an adult pattern. Rawlings does produce a youth version in the Renegade. The model number for that mitt is R115FBM.
John
Would this work for an 11 year old boy? Or would it be too big? Jacob
Generally speaking, we would recommend a 12.00 inch model like the Rawlings R9 Series 12" Youth First Base Mitt: R9YPTFM16B for an 11 year old player. With that being said, if the player feels comfortable using a larger mitt then there is nothing wrong with getting the Rawlings Renegade 12.5" First Base Mitt: RFBMB.
Cameron
My son is 10 (he is tall for his age). Would this glove be too big for him? Also, he is a lefty thrower. Mike
Our general recommendation for a 10 year old needing a 1B mitt would be 12.00 inches. If the player feels comfortable with a slightly bigger mitt, then the Rawlings Renegade 12.5" First Base Mitt: RFBMB would be a great option to consider.
Cameron
My son is a freshman in high school is this glove ok for him? John
If he is smaller for his age, this Rawlings could work well for him, but I would estimate the wrist opening/finger stalls as more of a youth/intermediate size rather than a standard adult size on this glove, so it could be a bit tight/small if he is larger or grows.
Kyle
Is this model for fastpitch softball? Brianb
The Rawlings Renegade 12.5" First Base Mitt: RFBMB is a youth baseball mitt.
Patrick
What is the difference between the Rawlings Renegade and Rawlings Premium lines for first base mitts? John
The Premium series by Rawlings is designed to fit an adult sized hand while the Renegade is more of a youth fitting glove.
Ryan
I am confused, the RFBMB in your Q & A show answers of being for adults and for youth. Does it fit adults ED
This Rawlings Renegade 12.5" First Base Mitt: RFBMB is more designed for young teens, it is possible it could fit an adult but unlikely.
Ryan
14U fast pitch softball player, would I need to purchase a 12.5” or 13” first base mitt? Norma
For a 14U player, we would recommend a 1B mitt around 12.25-12.50 inches. The Rawlings Renegade 12.5" First Base Mitt: RFBMB would have the correct size but the mitt is designed for baseball.
Cameron
Would this work for a 16 year old? I don’t want to spend a ton because he only plays 1st base part time since he is an outfielder and pitchers. JJ
The Rawlings Renegade 12.5" First Base Mitt: RFBMB is not likely going to be a good fit on the hand of a 16 year old. As well, the leather and padding is not ideal at the high school level as the velocity on the throws will break down the leather shell rather quickly.

About the Brand

Rawlings is a major manufacturer of competitive team sports equipment and apparel for baseball, basketball, and football, as well as licensed MLB, NFL, and NCAA retail products. Rawlings is a major supplier to professional, collegiate, interscholastic, and amateur organizations worldwide, including the Official Baseball Supplier to Major League Baseball.

The first real innovation in glove making occurred in 1912 when Rawlings Sporting Goods Company introduced the "Sure Catch" glove, which was "endorsed by leading players all over the country." The Sure Catch was a one-piece glove with sewn-in finger channels and looked better suited for a duck's foot than a man's hand. Catchers' mitts used at the time were large and bulky with a single leather thong passing for a web.

In 1920, Bill Doak, a journeyman pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, approached Rawlings with an idea for improving the baseball glove from a mere protective device to a genuine aid in fielding. The "Bill Doak" model was so revolutionary that it stayed in Rawlings' line until 1953. Its key feature was a multi-thong web laced into the first finger and thumb, which created for the first time in baseball's young life, a natural pocket.

In 1925, Rawlings unveiled a three-fingered fielder's glove, and ten years later improved the Bill Doak model with a two-piece leather web. At the same time, the "T" web became a rage for first basemen's mitts. The pocket underwent a pronounced change in 1941 when the Trapper Mitt, also known as the Claw, appeared. The "Deep Well" pocket was so unique that Rawlings quickly patented it. The design was improved in 1950 by adding a leather piece across the top. Another significant creation occurred in 1948 with the three-fingered Playmaker. A five-fingered fielder's model, with all fingers laced together, provided greater pocket control.

The six-fingered Trap-Eze evolved in the 1960's. In more recent years, Rawlings produced the Fastback design, which gives a glove a snugger fit, greater extension, and overall control. The Holdster is a slot through which a finger can be extended for additional protection from impacts on the pocket. Then, there is the Edge-U-Cated Heel with its extended U-shaped lacing and the Pro H Web and much-copied Basket Web.

Some of Rawlings's more recent glove innovations also include the unique Spin-Stopper design which reduces ball spin when the ball hits the glove, and the Cantilever glove design feature that provides a cushioned area between the hand and the glove's palm area. In all, Rawlings has produced and patented more functionally innovative glove features and designs than that of any other glove manufacturer. The result is that the modern baseball glove is much larger, more comfortable, better padded, and made to last far longer than its ancestors. It is not uncommon to see today's Major League players wearing the same Rawlings glove they wore during their college playing days. In fact, Rawlings is the #1 glove in the major leagues. Rawlings maintains about 65 models of baseball and softball mitts and gloves in its line. The prototypes of virtually all of them have been field-tested by professionals before entering a sporting goods dealer's inventory.
