Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Rawlings Heart of the Hide 13" Baseball First Base Mitt: PRODCTCB? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

Is the pocket big enough for Slow pitch Softball? Drazen
The pocket of the Rawlings Heart of the Hide 13" First Base Mitt: PRODCTCB will be large enough for slow pitch softball.
Max
Can the gloves be personalized with player's name stitched on them and can we purchase that option from you guys? frank giordano
Unfortunately we do not offer the ability to have a player's name stitched on the Rawlings Heart of the Hide 13" First Base Mitt: PRODCTCB.
Cameron
My son has been using a Rawlings 12 inch youth taper first base mitt for two years now. He is 11 years old and complaining that it is too small. Would this glove be good for him to try or should I get the 12.5 RG2 model? Joe Treadwell
For most 11 year old players, a 13" mitt, such as the Rawlings Heart of the Hide 13" First Base Mitt: PRODCTCB, is a little big. My initial suggestion would be to go with a 12.5" mitt if he feels he needs something larger, such as the Rawlings Heart of the Hide R2G 12.5" First Base Mitt: PRORFM18-17BC.
Logan
My son is 14, in 8th grade and closing in on 6' tall. Is 13" too big? Thinking long term with this glove purchase that it will get him through high school. Tony
Whether or not to get the Rawlings Heart of the Hide 13" First Base Mitt: PRODCTCB will ultimately come down to what the player feels most comfortable with. Per his age, our general recommendation would be a 12.50 inch 1B mitt but there is certainly nothing wrong with getting something larger.
Cameron
Son is 6’1 left-handed. Is varsity high school first baseman his 12.5 gloves too small for his hand is the 13 going to be big enough or do you have a bigger size? Joe
The size of the glove will reference the length of the glove, not the overall fit of the Rawlings Heart of the Hide 13" First Base Mitt: PRODCTCB. If the 12.5'' is too small for his hand I would imagine the Rawlings Heart of the Hide 13" First Base Mitt: PRODCTCB will fit better as well give him a bit more length.
Max
Would a 14 yr old be ok with this mitt? He's 6'2 at 185. He has a smaller one right now. david Nix
Generally speaking, we would recommend a smaller 1B mitt for someone that is 14 years of age, around 12.50. With that being said, there is certainly nothing wrong with getting the Rawlings Heart of the Hide 13" First Base Mitt: PRODCTCB if the player is comfortable with a slightly larger mitt. Per his current measurements, this mitt would serve him better long term.
Cameron
Since the glove is 13 inches and a larger glove, does that mean if I have an average, to below average, sized hand, this glove would be too big for me? I like for my glove to not be very loose and have sort of a snug fit. Alexander Paschall
The correct size mitt to get comes down to player preference and what they are ultimately most comfortable and confident with. The Rawlings Heart of the Hide 13" First Base Mitt: PRODCTCB will be on the larger size in terms of 1B mitts as 13 inches is the largest size allowed. The fit is set up for an adult hand and may not be the best fit for you based on your provided information. We do offer a 100 day guarantee on all mitts and gloves so if you decided to get this mitt and found it not to your liking, even after using it, you could send it back within 100 days for a refund.
Cameron
Which one will last longer? This mitt or Wilson A2000 SuperSkin 12.5" First Base Mitt: WTA20RB201620SS? Kevin Gallmeier
The Rawlings Heart of the Hide 13" First Base Mitt (PRODCTCB) & the Wilson A2000 SuperSkin 12.5" First Base Mitt (WTA20RB201620SS) are very similar as far as leather quality goes. So, these mitts will both last for 10+ years if given proper care.
Frank
Will this be a big enough pocket for slow pitch? Had the 12.5 but had to return cuz it seemed too small Ryan
Yes, this Rawlings Heart of the Hide 13" First Base Mitt: PRODCTCB should work well for slow pitch softball.
Ryan
I'm 25, 175 cm tall. My hand, from tip of middle finger to wrist, is 8 inches and, from tip of pinky to tip of thumb, is 8.5 inches. I want to know, is a 13 inch 1B mitt (I have one) too big for me? I want to make sure not to buy a new one. Waris
What size of 1B mitt to use really boils down to player preference. A 13 inch mitt, like the Rawlings Heart of the Hide 13" First Base Mitt: PRODCTCB, would be the largest one could use. Most players will use a 12.50-12.75 inch mitt but if you feel comfortable with the larger option then that is what we would suggest you use.
Cameron
Where is glove made? Bill Hutson
The Rawlings Heart of the Hide 13" First Base Mitt: PRODCTCB, to the best of our knowledge, is made in the Philippines.
Cameron
Much like the prior question of Drazen, my daughter plays fastpitch softball. Will this glove be acceptable? She's also 10 years old. Will her hand fit inside comfortably or will her fingers be loose? Arnett Counts
For a 10 year old 1B, we recommend a mitt around 12.25 inches. The Rawlings Heart of the Hide 13" First Base Mitt: PRODCTCB is a baseball 1B mitt and would be too big for a 10 year old fastpitch softball player.
Cameron
Could this glove be used for fast pitch softball? Rich
The Rawlings Heart of the Hide 13" First Base Mitt: PRODCTCB could be used for fastpitch softball as long as the player is comfortable with the larger hand setting on the mitt.
Cameron
Does this model have a palm pad? Steve
Rawlings will have padding stitched into the leather palm on the Rawlings Heart of the Hide 13" Baseball First Base Mitt: PRODCTCB. As well, there is a padded thumb sleeve, thermoformed padding for the back of the wrist and index finger pad.

About the Brand

Rawlings is a major manufacturer of competitive team sports equipment and apparel for baseball, basketball, and football, as well as licensed MLB, NFL, and NCAA retail products. Rawlings is a major supplier to professional, collegiate, interscholastic, and amateur organizations worldwide, including the Official Baseball Supplier to Major League Baseball.

The first real innovation in glove making occurred in 1912 when Rawlings Sporting Goods Company introduced the "Sure Catch" glove, which was "endorsed by leading players all over the country." The Sure Catch was a one-piece glove with sewn-in finger channels and looked better suited for a duck's foot than a man's hand. Catchers' mitts used at the time were large and bulky with a single leather thong passing for a web.

In 1920, Bill Doak, a journeyman pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, approached Rawlings with an idea for improving the baseball glove from a mere protective device to a genuine aid in fielding. The "Bill Doak" model was so revolutionary that it stayed in Rawlings' line until 1953. Its key feature was a multi-thong web laced into the first finger and thumb, which created for the first time in baseball's young life, a natural pocket.

In 1925, Rawlings unveiled a three-fingered fielder's glove, and ten years later improved the Bill Doak model with a two-piece leather web. At the same time, the "T" web became a rage for first basemen's mitts. The pocket underwent a pronounced change in 1941 when the Trapper Mitt, also known as the Claw, appeared. The "Deep Well" pocket was so unique that Rawlings quickly patented it. The design was improved in 1950 by adding a leather piece across the top. Another significant creation occurred in 1948 with the three-fingered Playmaker. A five-fingered fielder's model, with all fingers laced together, provided greater pocket control.

The six-fingered Trap-Eze evolved in the 1960's. In more recent years, Rawlings produced the Fastback design, which gives a glove a snugger fit, greater extension, and overall control. The Holdster is a slot through which a finger can be extended for additional protection from impacts on the pocket. Then, there is the Edge-U-Cated Heel with its extended U-shaped lacing and the Pro H Web and much-copied Basket Web.

Some of Rawlings's more recent glove innovations also include the unique Spin-Stopper design which reduces ball spin when the ball hits the glove, and the Cantilever glove design feature that provides a cushioned area between the hand and the glove's palm area. In all, Rawlings has produced and patented more functionally innovative glove features and designs than that of any other glove manufacturer. The result is that the modern baseball glove is much larger, more comfortable, better padded, and made to last far longer than its ancestors. It is not uncommon to see today's Major League players wearing the same Rawlings glove they wore during their college playing days. In fact, Rawlings is the #1 glove in the major leagues. Rawlings maintains about 65 models of baseball and softball mitts and gloves in its line. The prototypes of virtually all of them have been field-tested by professionals before entering a sporting goods dealer's inventory.
