Description

Akadema Prodigy Series Youth Baseball Catcher's Mitt: AGC98-12

Akadema is the most exciting baseball and softball company in the world. Their increasing market share can be attributed to their innovative quality and professionally designed product line. Focusing on the quality, feel, and small details has lifted Akadema to the next level. With a goal to provide products for all ball players, Akadema has created the new Prodigy Youth Series.

Glove Benefits

Constructed from U.S. Steerhide throughout the pocket and webbing, the Prodigy Series provides ideal toughness and padding. On the back of the glove, this series features the exclusive AkademaLyte leather that decreases the overall weight. This not only allows these gloves to be more easily playable, it also significantly decreases the break-in time to the point where these gloves are virtually game-ready out of the box. With the younger player in mind, Akadema slightly narrowed the finger stalls on these gloves to provide a more snug fit. Akadema: Bring Your "A Game"! Free Shipping!

Pros: my son is a 9 year old catcher and he is very satisified with this glove

Cons: wish it could be in a 32.50 or 33.00 in. glove

Pros: Love this mitt. Bought it for my 10 year old lefty catcher and he thinks its great. It took some time to break in but we don't believe proper mitts are game ready "out of the box".

Pros: Padding, design, break in period: 9U kid catching 10U/11U pitchers. He says he loves it and it feels good. It shows as a big target. It is quick getting the ball out of glove. The break in period has gone well and fairly quick.

Cons: None to mention.

Pros: My 10 year old son has been using this mitt for a year. He loves it. Just purchased another one because he plays year round (70 games) and has put a lot of "mileage" on it. Perfect catchers mitt for youth ball. Lightweight, fast break-in, good pocket, excellent padding, well constructed.

Cons: None.

Act162This

Pros: Well padded, good quality construction, and fits my son well. We didn't have to re-lace it to get it to fit his hand. After a couple of practices and working it at night, he is able to close it a little (if they're not too big or strong, it is a bit stiff at first).

Great youth catchers glove

Pros: This is a wonderful glove. You can tell it is high quality from the get-go. One steaming and it was almost fully broken in. Of all the gloves we have on my son's 10u team, this is the glove everyone wants to use. And for good reason. This glove has a great pocket and closes easily. If a ball gets by our catchers, it's not because of the glove.

Cons: None so far. This is an amazing glove.

Pros: Great Glove! Originally purchased the mizuno power close but sent it back due to its size (Small pocket). This glove is much deeper and is easy for my 10 year old to handle. Very high quality leather

Pros: Purchased for my 11 year old. He's 5', 99 pounds. Love the glove. Traps the ball better and has better padding than the aging Mizuno he has used for a couple of years. Design and quality are better than anything at this price. Yes you will have to break it in but it only took a week of catch and some glove conditioner. When you read my "Cons" you will see that we'll probably need a larger glove in a year, but it will be another Akadema.

Cons: Smaller than I expected, based on other reviews. The 32" size is fine. The problem is that I was hoping this would be a transition glove and be used for a few years before moving to an adult size. It is a youth size glove that we'll be lucky if he can use next year.

Travel Ball

Pros: Soft, light and comfortable, easy to break-in and just feels good.

Cons: Padding breaks down real fast on this glove. Hard to hold onto fastballs, have a tendency to pop out of glove.

Very good mitt mef57 parent

Pros: This is our first Akadema mitt. Out of the box it was pretty stiff, as you'd expect a decent catcher's mitt to be. I applied a 2 lb. dead blow hammer somewhat vigorously to the key break in points, rubbed in some Nokona glove conditioner, and it was game ready. My ten year old son has yet to have a ball pop out due to any problem with the glove. The glove is shaped well for the position, the size is great for youth players and it fits my son's hand really well. Subjectively, its a very attractive mitt, and that pebble grain finish is unique. It has a gimmicky and very spongey bubble shaped pad in it apparently intended to protect the base of the index finger. i wiuld think this could've been made more effective with a more dense and flatter foam pad. but that's a pretty small complaint, if it even is a complaint. My son hasn't objected to the bubble though, and is very satisfied with the glove. I am too. It's an excellent $100 youth catcher's mitt.

Cons: see above

Coach Daddy

Pros: This is a very nice glove, it has the proper fit and finish to be a 300$ glove. The pocket is deep enough out of the wrapper and the padding is just right.

Cons: The cons on this glove are really none. The leather is very "slippery" almost abrasive in certain areas. I suppose if you treat it with conditioner that will go away. It's stiff out of the wrapper.

Pros: 9U catcher. Great glove for a young catcher. The cut in on the pads create a bigger pocket. Breaks in fairly easily. Other kids started to borrow it during our games. I highly recommend this glove for any young catcher.

Cons: None.

Great Glove Chad Miner Parent

Pros: This glove came pretty much game ready. Gave it a good oiling and after a little use, it’s like my 10 YO has used it for years. He loves the feel on the inside of the glove. He says it feels thinner then his other glove but he said it doesn’t hurt to receive the ball and gives him more feel for catching. The web is slightly different then other gloves and it really sucks the ball right in. Great glove and good price.

Cons: None to this point

Have a question about the Akadema Prodigy Series Youth Baseball Catcher's Mitt: AGC98-12? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

How is this glove different than the black and gray Gary Carter Model? catch22
The only difference is the color.
Kara
I have a 10 year old that plays very competitive travel ball. Looking for a catcher's mitt that is high quality and will fit his hand well. Something he can control with good padding. Do you recommend or is there another preferred option? cfb
This will be a very nice mitt. This has good padding and will be a durable glove. I would also check out some Wilson, Rawlings and All-star.
KG
My son is 12 and plays at a high level with pitchers who throws in the 70s. He needs good padding, but has smaller hands. What gloves could you steer me towards? I'm interested in the Akadema and All Star series in a 32" model? EAZ
Both are great options, the all star has a slightly better leather quality but the akadema is very light weight
John
My son is 10 years old. Will this mitt last him for the next 2 years? Is it ready to be used in a game out of the bag? Tim
This glove should last him a couple of seasons. This glove comes game ready out of the bag.
KG
I am a high school catcher and I am looking to find a new catcher's mitt that, when worked in, will make a square in the pocket. Will this glove do that and can you recommend one specifically that will? hagen_tucker
Any glove will be able to make a square in the pocket, it will just depend on how you break the glove in.
KB
Will this mitt fit an adult hand? My 10 year old lefty is starting to sting my hand and need to get a proper catcher's mitt. charlie
This particular model of the Akadema Prodigy Series is a youth model and will not be a good fit for your hand while catching. Here are some adult model Akadema catcher's mitts that will work great for you. http://www.justballgloves.com/compare/
Tom
I am 11. Will this fit my hand? SEAN
Based on our Glove Coach feature on our website, a 32 in. catcher's mitt is recommended. The Akadema Prodigy Sereis is a 32 in. model.
Nick K.
My son turns 8 this summer. Will this glove fit him? He's a lefty, so the Akadema ADS 90 is not an option. Windy
For an 8 year old, a 32" model is a little larger than average. More common size youth catcher mitts for an 8 year old are 30" or 31".
Tyler
Can this mitt be used for fastpitch softball? My daughter is 11-years-old. NM
The Akadema Prodigy Series: AGC98-12 Youth Catcher's Mitt is designed for Youth baseball. Based on her age, we recommend a 32.00" fastpitch model. For further sizing information, please visit our Glove Coach at http://www.justballgloves.com/glove-coach/
Mac
I'm an 11.50 size first base mitt and now I have to catch. What size catcher mitt should I get? Eddie
Sizing depends on the age of the player. I recommend our glove coach. It's a great tool: http://www.justballgloves.com/glove-coach/
Tyler
Best and fasted way break in the glove? Tom
Here is a helpful link that applies to gloves and mitts: http://www.justballgloves.com/glove-resource-guide/breaking-in-a-glove/
Tyler
What kind of oil/conditioner is recommended if I buy this mitt? COSouthpaw
I would recommend the Akadema Glove Conditioner for the Akadema Prodigy Series. http://www.justballgloves.com/product/akadema-glove-conditioner/16879/
Frank
My son is 9 years old and plays competitive travelling baseball as a catcher. He had a smaller glove (not sure the size) but it is worn out and he complains that it is too tight. Will this glove be a good fit for him? He is a big/tall 9 year old (103 lbs). Coop
The Akadema Prodigy Series: AGC98-12 Youth Catcher's Mitt would be a great fit for a player his age and size. It will be easy to break-in and is durable.
Kara
My son is 8 turning 9 (April) with an above average build (100-105 lbs); however, he has average sized hands for his age. Would you recommend the Akadema AGC98 or would you recommend dropping down to the Akadema ADS-90? Jeff
We recommend the Akadema Rookie Series (ADS90-12) for his size. A player with larger hands could use the Akadema Prodigy Series (AGC98-12).
Kara
I am in travel ball. I play very often, almost every day. I am 10, 5', and 110 pounds. I usually do not play catcher much, but now that Little League is starting, I will be playing it more and more. If this is not a good glove for me, what is? Tanner
The Akadema Prodigy Series (AGC98-12) is a great option for your age. It will be easy to break-in and a durable glove.
Kara
My son catches and currently has a rookie/starter glove. He is 11 and 90 lbs. He complains with his current glove that his thumb gets sore. Does this glove or another glove have extra protection in the thumb area? MJP
The Akadema Prodigy Series (AGC98-12) features new stress wedge technology. This provides extra padding on a players index finger and thumb.
Kara
Is this glove durable? Peter
The Akadema Prodigy Series (AGC98-12) Youth Catcher's Mitt is constructed from U.S Steerhide and AkademaLyte leather which results in a not only a lighter mitt, but a durable mitt as well.
Chinyere
I understand the laces being a bit loose and in need of tightening when new but how loose/tight should the web laces be? The double strung laces confuse me. Seems like a great glove. CB
The laces on the Akadema Prodigy Series (AGC98-12 Youth Catcher's Mitt) should fit comfortably but the glove should still be able to properly perform. The feel of the laces ultimately comes down to personal preference.
Allison
How is the palm padding on this mitt? I purchased a Nokona AL-3200 for my son that he now refuses to use because of the lack of protection in the palm. I really don't want to repeat this scenario. RockOfRockyTop
The Akadema Prodigy Series (AGC98-12) has relatively average level padding for a youth mitt but the high quality leather and stress wedge allow the pocket's leather to be more reinforced which helps protect the hand. Stress Wedge technology, located between the index finger and thumb, the Praying Mantis offers shock-absorbing protection for the hand against injury and sting when receiving the ball.
Patrick
How big is the glove? superseab
The Akadema Prodigy Series (AGC98-12) is a 32 inch pocket with a youth fit on the inside.
Patrick
Would you recommend steaming this glove to reduce break-in time? Charles
No. we do not recommend steaming as a method of break-in for any of the gloves that we sell because it can damage the leather and reduce its usable lifespan. A mitt like the Akadema Prodigy Series (AGC98-12) would be better off with more traditional break-in methods.
Patrick
What size of catcher glove should I get for my 12 year old? HubbersCoach
Typically, for a 12 year old catcher, I would recommend using a 32.00 inch pattern. The Akadema Prodigy Series: AGC98-12 Youth Catcher's Mitt does feature a 32.00 inch pattern so this mitt would be perfect.
John P.
My son is 11 years old, 5'3" and 145 lbs. Is a 32" good for him? And will this glove last him through his 12 year old season? Kahuna
At 11 years old, the 32.00" circumference of this Akadema Prodigy Series (AGC98-12 Youth Catcher's Mitt) should work well for your player. As well, I believe that even through his age 12 season, the 32.00" should be the correct size for use by him.
Ben
My son is 6 foot 230 pounds. What size of catchers mitt should I get him? baseball mom
Would recommend getting your son a 32.00 catcher's mitt like the Akadema Prodigy Series: AGC98-12 Youth Catcher's Mitt or a 32.50 inch pattern.
Cameron
My son is 9 years old and on the smallish side; like 4'2". Would this glove be too big for him? Phil
For a 9 year old youth player, this Akadema Prodigy Series (AGC98-12 Youth Catcher's Mitt) will be a little larger in circumference (32.00") than what we usually suggest for 9 year old catchers (31.00"). However, the glove will have Youth fitting that should fit your player's hand well (maybe a little large starting out since he is smaller). I think that this glove would actually give him something into which he could grow with time. If you are okay getting a glove that may be a little large at the start, I would definitely consider this model.
Ben
Comparing the Akadema AGC98-12 and All Star CM1200BT which forms a deeper pocket easiest and which breaks in quickest without steaming the glove? We are buying a new glove as a replacement for an Easton Mako 31 inch youth glove that has not boxed or formed any type of pocket at all during break in and is getting donated. TK
Both the Akadema Prodigy Series: AGC98-12 Youth Catcher's Mitt and the All Star Young Pro Series: CM1200BT Youth Catcher's Mitt are not going to be too difficult to break in. With that being said of the two gloves I would say that the Akadema Prodigy Series: AGC98-12 Youth Catcher's Mitt was the easier to break in of the two. Both options will form a deep pocket.
Carter
My son is 10 and looking for a new glove that is reliable and won't break the bank. I am looking at this glove and the Rawlings (GCM32PTB). Can you give me the pros/cons of this Akadema and the Rawlings in terms of break-in time as well as padding? Also, which of these is the heavier glove? JC
Both this Akadema Prodigy Series (AGC98-12 Youth Catcher's Mitt) and the Rawlings (GCM32PTB) will be pretty ready for use right out of the box. Only a short break-in would be needed for either glove. In regard to padding, both gloves will have the sufficient amount to keep the palm of a ten year old player comfortable. Unfortunately, I was not able to weigh both gloves, but in my opinion, neither will posses a weight that will make the glove uncomfortable for use.
Ben
I'm 12 years old. I don't how big glove do I need. What do you recommend? sch
For a 12 year old catcher, we would make a general recommendation of getting a mitt in the 32.00" circumference. This Akadema Prodigy Series (AGC98-12 Youth Catcher's Mitt) will have a 32.00" circumference on it, but it will also come with a a youth fitting to it. That youth fitting may be a little too small. I might recommend looking to a 32.00" or 32.5" circumference mitt that has more of an adult fitting.
Ben
My son is 7 going in 8. He wants to start catching. Is this a good first mitt for a beginner? JW
For a 7 or 8 year old youth player, this Akadema Prodigy Series (AGC98-12 Youth Catcher's Mitt) will be a little larger in circumference (32.00") than what we usually suggest for a 7 or 8 year old catchers (31.00"). However, the glove will have Youth fitting that should fit your player's hand well (maybe a little large starting out since he is smaller). I think that this glove would actually give him something into which he could grow with time. If you are okay getting a glove that may be a little large at the start, I would definitely consider this model.
Dan
What's the difference between the AGC98-12 and AGC98 model being sold on the Akadema website? Orlo
This Akadema Prodigy Series (AGC98-12 Youth Catcher's Mitt) will be the same mitt as the AGC 98 that is listed on Akadema's site. Both gloves are 32" in circumference and feature same quality of leather. Akadema allows us to list ours slightly lower to encourage customers to buy from our site.
Ben
What MPH is this glove good for? grajuza
Since the Akadema Prodigy Series Youth Catcher's Mitt: AGC98-12 is a youth model, it is best served for velocity 65 MPH or less although there is not a MPH limitation that Akadema recommends for this mitt.
Cameron
Can this glove work for softball ? itsintheblood
I would not recommend the Akadema Prodigy Series Youth Catcher's Mitt: AGC98-12 for softball as the pocket is designed for a baseball and you might have trouble controlling a softball with it.
Tori
Is the mitt for a righty? solo
Yes, the Akadema Prodigy Series Youth Catcher's Mitt: AGC98-12 is available in a right handed thrower.
Tori
Is the Stress Wedge feature on this model unique to Akadema or do other brands have a similar system? Matt
The Stress Wedge on the Akadema Prodigy Series Youth Catcher's Mitt: AGC98-12 is specific to Akadema.
Cameron
My son is 10u travel (moving up to 11U next month). He’s primary catcher and has been using an All Star 31.5”. The padding is shot after a couple of years, time for a new glove. He’s very small for his age, 4’3” and 68 lbs. He’s catching 60-65 MPH fast balls. Will this glove be his best bet or should we go with a 31.5” again? Joe Dennisson
The Akadema Prodigy Series Youth Baseball Catcher's Mitt: AGC98-12 would be a great option for an 11U player. Unless your player is more comfortable with the slightly smaller 31.50 inch size mitt then there is no reason not to consider the jump up to a 32 inch mitt.

About the Brand

In Akadema's short but remarkable history it has become one of America's hottest baseball and softball equipment company for professional, college, high school, and serious youth players. The Akadema phenomenon started with the Professional Glove Series and continues with the Reptilian®, Praying Mantis®, Pro Soft™ and Prodigy™ Glove Series as well as the Amish Wood™, Tacktion™ and Xtension® Aluminum Bat Series. Akadema's ownership attributes increasing market share to their innovative professional baseball and softball product line in contrast to mass-produced products that have little to do with quality, feel, or design to raise the level of play.

Akadema's products are manufactured for professional players but are now accessible to semi pro, college, high school, and serious youth players. Akadema products are still designed with the professional player in mind but competitively priced for the professional player at heart. So it's your turn to think like a professional, play like a professional, and use Akadema Professional!

Akadema now has both baseball and fastpitch softball advisory staffs that they work with closely to implement new ideas. Members of the baseball advisory staff include Hall of Famers Ozzie Smith and Gary Carter as well as Howard Johnson, Reggie Smith, Luis Polonia, Sandy Martinez and many others. Fastpitch stars that are on the advisory staff include Crystl Bustos and Julie Smith. The input on performance from the advisory staff gives Akadema something they cannot put a price on. Their advisors don’t talk about marketing or places to sell the gloves, they just care about performance.
