Description

The Akadema Praying Mantis Catcher's Mitt is made from Akadema's Pro Soft Leather. The Praying Mantis Series uses Pro Soft Leather that is very soft and easy to break-in. Ultimately, the Praying Mantis Series design provides the player with a more pliable glove. This allows for easier break-in. The APM241 combines the quality and softness of the Pro Soft Soft Series with the technology of the Praying Mantis design. The Akadema patent Praying Mantis is the most innovative catcher's mitt ever to hit the market, with many unique features setting it apart from the competition. With new patent "Stress Wedge" technology, located between the index finger and thumb, the Praying Mantis offers shock-absorbing protection for the hand against injury and sting when receiving the ball. The Praying Mantis also offers two additional "Finger Hammocks" allowing the fingers to be firmly positioned and more secure in the glove. Additional features include the Double-sided Slim Padding allowing for increased pocket size and easier ball retention. Uniquely designed shape allows the throwing hand easier access in the pocket, resulting in a quicker glove to hand transfer and faster times to second base. Chris

Pros: Great quality for the price.

Cons: It just seemed huge. My 13 year old son felt like it was humongous, and it was big on my hand as well. We went with a smaller, more youth-oriented model.

Pros: Was shocked at the quick break in. My son is 11 and this is a massive upgrade from the youth glove he was catching with. He's found it easier to get the ball out and has zero sting. Very impressed.

Great Purchase Mom Parent

Pros: Bought for son when he started playing catcher on his HS team. Needed something quality that could hold up against HS pitchers, but also something that would be game ready relatively quickly (needed to replace another catchers mitt that wasn't doing the job). Also, we weren't in the market for a super expensive glove because we weren't sure he would be playing catcher past this season. He used it in practice for a week to catch bullpen, worked with it at home to break it in, and was able to use it in a game within a week. But it still has enough structure to protect his hand and last the season without falling apart. And it was on sale, which made mom happy. He says it snaps closed, holds the ball in the pocket, and is a great glove. He feels like it is helping him be successful. The other catchers on the team are now looking to buy one for themselves.

Cons: None

Very nice mitt! Shawn Parent

Pros: Good Lookin mitt Constructed well Quality leather Broke in nice I'm a parent that used to be a catcher. I bought this to play catch with my son hoping to spark the interest in him.

Cons: Very stiff initially but after lots of conditioner and rapping with ball in palm, it broke in very nicely

Great glove for the price Matt Parent

Pros: This is an excellent glove especially for this price level. Great padding. My 11 year old stopped using the extra thumb guard he was using in his other glove. He said this glove had enough padding that he didn't need it. Break in was quicker than expected. Had it steamed and used some break in oil. My son was catching games with it in 2 days.

Cons: None

Questions and Answers

How long does this glove take to break in and does it stay firm or does it start to get floppy? boomorang
The break-in on this glove should not take long. This glove has been known to be a very durable glove and will be one that you will be able to use for multiple seasons.
Brett
Does the ball often fall out of the pocket of this glove? baseball dude
No. The APM241 features a double flex-hinge technology which helps the mitt snap close at contact with the ball. It's a great catcher's mitt.
Tyler
Does this glove have a problem holding its shape with the pro soft leather? Tdog26
The Akadema Precision Series Praying Mantis should not have a problem not keeping it's shape. This glove has been known to be a very durable glove and will be one that you will be able to use for years.
Jennifer
My son is 11.5 years old and has been catching for going on 4 years. He is currently using a 31.5" mitt and it's too small. Is jumping up to a 33" too much? Also, I was looking at this glove and the Mizuno GXC95Y, which one is a better quality glove and which one will break-in the fastest? chris
The 12 year old catcher is recommended to use a glove size of 32". The gloves you are looking at are 33". It all just depends on your son's hands size and how he prefers his gloves. Both the Akadema Precision Series Praying Mantis: APM241 and the Mizuno GXC95Y will break-in easily. Both will also have great quality. I really think both mitts could work well for your son.
Brandon
I'm 13 turning 14 in about a month. I'm not a huge kid, I'm 5'2" and about 90 pounds. I use a fielders mitt size 11.50". I play travel, would this glove be a good size? Is there another glove you would recommend? Sam
The Akadema Precision Series Praying Mantis: APM241 Catcher's Mitt would be a good option at 33.00",if you wanted to have the mitt for a couple years.
Aubrey
I'm turning 12 in about a month. A 32.5" feels like it has to small of a pocket. Do you think a 33" would be good? Michael
The 33" pattern size of the Akadema Precision Series Praying Mantis: APM241 Catcher's Mitt would be a great option for a 12 year old catcher. The increased pattern size would give you a slightly larger pocket, but it should not be too much for you to handle.
Mac
What type of web does this glove have? Austin
The Akadema Precision Series Praying Mantis (APM241) will feature a closed web design.
Patrick
Which catcher's mitt should I get my 13 year old son who is 5 foot 3 and weighs 139 pounds? Warrior
The Akadema Precision Series Praying Mantis (APM241) would be a nice option for a player that age.
Patrick
My son is turning 12 soon and just started catching this last Fall, he has been using a Rawlings Renegade RCMB. The pocket on the Rawlings is shallow. I am looking to purchase him a new mitt. Would this mitt be a good fit? CM
This Akadema Precision Series Praying Mantis (APM241 Catcher's Mitt) will come with a 33" circumference on it that should provide a good sized pocket for your player. It might be a little large at the outset. However, if you feel that he can handle the larger fitting glove and think he will grow into it well with time, I would definitely consider this glove.
Ben
Is this glove suitable for fastpitch softball? pappy
The Akadema Precision Series Praying Mantis: APM241 Catcher's Mitt is constructed for baseball use. One could certainly use this for softball if they wanted but most softball catcher's mitts will be constructed similar to that of a 1B glove with additional padding.
Cameron
My son is 14 and will be playing HS baseball in the spring. He is small for his size (5' 4" and 115 lbs). He has an older Rawlings glove that has been used for 4+ years. I want something that will last him 2-3 years and is capable of catching 70-85 mph. Would this be a good glove for him? Mike
Yes, I think that this Akadema Precision Series Praying Mantis (APM241 Catcher's Mitt) will feature the circumference (33.00"), fitting (since you want something into which he can grow) and padding that will be needed by your player to perform well as a high school catcher handling 70-85 mph. However, if the pitching got consistently faster than that range, you may want to level up in regard to quality.
Ben
What is the top speed that this Akadema Precision Series Praying Mantis (APM241 Catcher's Mitt) is good for? Mike
This Akadema Precision Series Praying Mantis (APM241 Catcher's Mitt) will feature Select Steerhide Leather that will be able to handle some higher velocities in the 80s and maybe the 90s, but only for the short term. If you were going to be handling a staff that threw at high velocities consistently, you may want to level up your mitt in regard to leather quality.
Ben
What's the difference between this mitt and the APP240? Is one better than the other? frozen ropes
The two models are very similar and one is really not better than the other. The difference is the Akadema Precision Series Praying Mantis: APM241 Catcher's Mitt features a 33" pattern. The APP240 features a 33.50" pattern.
Jason
Would this be good for a high school catcher? Daniel
Yes, the Akadema Precision Series Praying Mantis: APM241 Catcher's Mitt should be a workable mitt for any high school catcher because of the 33" size and the Shock-Absorbing Protection. However, if you start competing on the varsity level and incorporate high-level travel into your playing schedule, you may want to level up your mitt in regard to quality
Tyler
How do you think this would hold up against mid 80s velo? Jack Lyle
This Akadema Precision Series Praying Mantis (APM241 Catcher's Mitt) should hold up in the short term in regard to performance and durability if used with pitchers that throw mid-80s velocity. If you wanted a mitt that would hold up for multiple seasons, I would probably recommend looking to a higher-end Akadema mitt.
Ben
Is this mitt used at the high school level? Pitchers that throw low 90's, and many throw 85+. James West
The Akadema Precision Series Praying Mantis: APM241 Catcher's Mitt is probably better suited for a younger catcher, between the ages of 12-15. Although it can probably handle that velocity, it most likely won't hold up to that velocity very long. If you consistently handle pitchers throwing that hard, you may want to look to a more higher-end Akadema mitt.
Cameron
My son is 9 and has been playing with the Mizuno GXC 105 for 4 years. He’s 4’7” and 100 lbs. He’s looking for an upgrade to help receive and block the ball better. I’m guessing this means bigger pocket and better leather? So far we are considering this Akedema and the Rawlings R9. Steve
Glove size is mostly based on personal preference, as some players may prefer a smaller glove for quicker transfers to throw down, while others may want a larger glove for blocking and catching. Both the Akadema Praying Mantis (APM241) and the Rawlings R9 will be very similar in terms of quality, so it will mostly come down to cosmetics and size as to which glove you might prefer.
Kyle
What size is this glove? Rick
The Akadema Precision Series Praying Mantis: APM241 Catcher's Mitt is a 33.00 inch circumference mitt.
Cameron
Would this glove be ideal for an 11 year old currently using a 32” mitt? He has smaller hands. TJ
Yes, this Akadema Precision Series Praying Mantis (APM2410) Catcher's Mitt would be a good fit for an 11-year-old (maybe a little large, but most likely should work).
Frank
Will this mitt fit an average size adult hand? Frank #17
The Akadema Precision Series Praying Mantis: APM241 Catcher's Mitt should fit an adult hand, it just may have more of a snug fit.
Tori
Can I get a left-handed catchers mitt? marv zaitz
