Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Rawlings Select 11.75" Baseball Glove: RS175BDW? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

Would this glove suit a 12 year old who plays outfield most of the time, just plays rec league. Dean
Yes, the 2017 Wilson A2K 12" First Base Mitt: A2KRB172800 is a great option for a 12 year old outfielder.
Sean
My 13U son plays 1st base, but wants to use an infield glove instead of a 1st base mitt because of weight and maneuvering. Would this glove be okay if he wanted to use an infield glove? Q
At 13 years old, I would really have a hard time telling someone to use an infield glove at 1st base. Although a first base mitt can be a little goofy and cumbersome to use at times, it does really benefit a player overall once they grow used to the glove. A 1B glove is designed to cover more area for a first basemen and also allow him to scoop balls in the dirt easier. I would have to recommend against using this 2017 Rawlings Select 11.75" Baseball Glove (RS175BDW) as an alternate first base mitt.
Ben
What glove do you suggest me for 14 year old playing shortstop (I don't want to pay over $100). Mr Baseball
I would recommend the 2017 Rawlings Select 11.75" Baseball Glove (RS175BDW) for you.

(1) Is this glove made with real leather? (2) Is it game-ready? Jose E.
(1) This 2017 Rawlings Select 11.75" Baseball Glove (RS175BDW) features a real all-leather shell to it. However, not the entire portion of the hand slot will be made of leather. (2) Yes, this glove will be game-ready when it is received.
Ben
What would be a good all around glove for me? I play outfield and a little infield and am 15? jj
The 2017 Rawlings Select 11.75" Baseball Glove: RS175BDW is an 11.75 inch pattern and is best served for 3B and possibly SS. For someone playing the OF it would be best to use a 12.50-12.75 inch pattern. Thus, there is really not a universal size that would be ideal for both infield and OF play; most INF's will use 11.25-11.75 depending on preference.
Cameron
I'm new to playing infield (primarily second base), and I'm looking for a glove that will best be suitable for me to play with at second base. I'm about 5'8-5'9 and weigh 135. So any recommendations/suggestions? I don't want to spend over 100 please. TheLoveofTheGame
The 2017 Rawlings Select 11.75" Baseball Glove: RS175BDW would be a good option, although I would take a look at going to 11.5''.
Max
I'm 12, about average size. I play primarily infield but I do play outfield every couple games or so. Would this be a good OF glove or should I use a 12"? (I use a 11.5 for infield) Mason
The 2017 Rawlings Select 11.75" Baseball Glove: RS175BDW would certainly work for outfield use at your age. However, a .25" difference is typically not a big difference, I would suggest going with a 12" model to provide a more noticeable difference.
Jason
Is it recommended for someone 21 years old? rene peñaloza
The 2017 Rawlings Select 11.75" Baseball Glove: RS175BDW would probably be a bit too snug for a player at that age.
Logan
I am a junior in HS. I am wondering if this would be a good glove for a pitcher/mid-infielder. Also, would the pinky slot be wide enough for two fingers? BP
This 2017 Rawlings Select 11.75" Baseball Glove (RS175BDW) would probably not feature the quality needed for play in high school. My suggestion would be the 2017 Rawlings Gamer 11.75" Baseball Glove (G205-15B). That mitt is the same 11.75" length, works for both mid-infield & pitcher, and also will allow you to wear the mitt with two fingers in the pinky slot.
Ben
I am 18 and plays middle infield as well as pitching would be a good choice for me? James
The 2017 Rawlings Select 11.75" Baseball Glove: RS175BDW, at 11.75 and featuring a modified trapeze web, is a great option for a pitcher/infielder. As for whether this glove would work for an 18 year old player that would come down more to hand size and personal preference. Generally speaking, this glove has more of an intermediate fit for a 12-15 year old.

About the Brand

Rawlings is a major manufacturer of competitive team sports equipment and apparel for baseball, basketball, and football, as well as licensed MLB, NFL, and NCAA retail products. Rawlings is a major supplier to professional, collegiate, interscholastic, and amateur organizations worldwide, including the Official Baseball Supplier to Major League Baseball.

The first real innovation in glove making occurred in 1912 when Rawlings Sporting Goods Company introduced the "Sure Catch" glove, which was "endorsed by leading players all over the country." The Sure Catch was a one-piece glove with sewn-in finger channels and looked better suited for a duck's foot than a man's hand. Catchers' mitts used at the time were large and bulky with a single leather thong passing for a web.

In 1920, Bill Doak, a journeyman pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, approached Rawlings with an idea for improving the baseball glove from a mere protective device to a genuine aid in fielding. The "Bill Doak" model was so revolutionary that it stayed in Rawlings' line until 1953. Its key feature was a multi-thong web laced into the first finger and thumb, which created for the first time in baseball's young life, a natural pocket.

In 1925, Rawlings unveiled a three-fingered fielder's glove, and ten years later improved the Bill Doak model with a two-piece leather web. At the same time, the "T" web became a rage for first basemen's mitts. The pocket underwent a pronounced change in 1941 when the Trapper Mitt, also known as the Claw, appeared. The "Deep Well" pocket was so unique that Rawlings quickly patented it. The design was improved in 1950 by adding a leather piece across the top. Another significant creation occurred in 1948 with the three-fingered Playmaker. A five-fingered fielder's model, with all fingers laced together, provided greater pocket control.

The six-fingered Trap-Eze evolved in the 1960's. In more recent years, Rawlings produced the Fastback design, which gives a glove a snugger fit, greater extension, and overall control. The Holdster is a slot through which a finger can be extended for additional protection from impacts on the pocket. Then, there is the Edge-U-Cated Heel with its extended U-shaped lacing and the Pro H Web and much-copied Basket Web.

Some of Rawlings's more recent glove innovations also include the unique Spin-Stopper design which reduces ball spin when the ball hits the glove, and the Cantilever glove design feature that provides a cushioned area between the hand and the glove's palm area. In all, Rawlings has produced and patented more functionally innovative glove features and designs than that of any other glove manufacturer. The result is that the modern baseball glove is much larger, more comfortable, better padded, and made to last far longer than its ancestors. It is not uncommon to see today's Major League players wearing the same Rawlings glove they wore during their college playing days. In fact, Rawlings is the #1 glove in the major leagues. Rawlings maintains about 65 models of baseball and softball mitts and gloves in its line. The prototypes of virtually all of them have been field-tested by professionals before entering a sporting goods dealer's inventory.
