Great Glove Dan Parent

Pros: This glove is great and my 8 year old improved at catching right away. He wants to be a first basemen, and this glove is easy to catch with and it gives him some confidence at the position. My son is rather large for his age, and the 11.5 inch size fits him perfectly. The glove should work well for a year or two, then we'll upgrade. This is at the lower end of the cost spectrum, but the glove is well made and is of good quality. The break-in service is also great, and the glove got here ready to use for his practice the next day.

Cons: None so far.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Rawlings Renegade 11.5" Youth Baseball First Base Mitt: R115FBM? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

I have a 7 year old who currently uses an A500 11.5" for first base. Is this a good glove for him to start getting used to a first base mitt? armando
The size and ease of use that the Rawlings Renegade 11.5" Youth First Base Mitt: R115FBM provides is ideal for a player of that age.
Logan
I have a 7 year old daughter who plays first base. She’s been using a regular glove but would like to get her a first base glove. Is this glove appropriate for softball? Bertha
Although the Rawlings Renegade 11.5" Youth First Base Mitt: R115FBM is a youth baseball first base mitt it could still be used by a 7 year old softball player.
Cameron
Son will be 8 this spring. He's taller than average and I'm hopeful to get a few seasons out of this mitt. Should I go 11.5 or 12.5? Drew Brown
I would recommend sticking at the 11.5'' in the Rawlings Renegade 11.5" Youth First Base Mitt: R115FBM. I feel as the 12.5'' model will be too much glove for an 8 year old to handle and perform adequately.
Max
I have a 10 year old grandson who plays first base. Would he best use the 11.5" or the 12.5'' glove? Carmine Coppola
At that age, most players will wear an 11.5" to 12" first base mitt, so I would go with the Rawlings Renegade 11.5" Youth First Base Mitt: R115FBM. However, if you want him to try it out, be sure to buy it with Glove Assurance. You can get Glove Assurance on the mitt for only $29.99 additional. For that extra amount, you'll get a 100 day trial period on the glove. If he decides within those 100 days that the glove is not for him, it can be sent back for a refund.
Logan
Would a 4 year old that plays 1st base benefit from this glove? He is currently using a Mizuno youth 10" glove. Hector
Per the player's age, the Rawlings Renegade 11.5" Youth First Base Mitt: R115FBM would be too big and not necessary at this time. Would recommend a 1B mitt around the age of 9-10.
Cameron
My son is a lefty first base man who plays 7U. He has a 10” glove that is highly broken in. Will the 11.5" be a significant game changer or should we hold out for a bigger glove? Tim
An 11.5" size like this Rawlings Renegade 11.5" (R115FBM) will certainly offer a slightly larger catching area and will help with picking throws out of the dirt. How much of a difference that makes depends on the player, so it is difficult to say exactly.
Kyle
My 9 year old has been recruited to play 1st base for a boys baseball team. Looking for a 1st base mitt and can't decide between the 11.5" and 12.5". Any advice? Travis
With the player specs listed, a 12 - 12.5 inch pattern would be recommended. The Rawlings R9 Series 12" Youth First Base Mitt: R9YPTFM16B would be a suggestion to look at for your player.
Daveron
What would be the next size larger? My son is 13 and I think this would be too small. Lori
The next size up would be the Rawlings Renegade 12.5" First Base Mitt: RFBMB which would be recommended for someone 13 years old.
Patrick
What is the size in inches of the hand opening? Rich
Unfortunately we do not know the size of the wrist opening on the Rawlings Renegade 11.5" Youth First Base Mitt: R115FBM.
Cameron
I have a 10u travel baseball player. He’s a lefty and wants a first base mitt. Would this one or the 12.5” be better? He’s a smaller 10 yr old. Holly Klug
For a 10U player, we would recommend a 1B mitt at 11.50-12.00 inches. Thus, the Rawlings Renegade 11.5" Youth First Base Mitt: R115FBM would be a great option to consider!
Cameron
do you have size 10.5 or an 11? Teresa
No unfortunately for this glove model it only comes in 11.5 or 12.5
Ryan
I have a 9.5 year old who is big for his age. Almost 5ft tall. Is this glove the right size or should I look at a 12.5 glove? Gary
The Rawlings Renegade 11.5" Youth First Base Mitt would be a great size as it fit ages from 7-15
Kristie
Is this all leather and not a leather shell? We've had problem ins the past with the ball popping out of the glove because it was a leather shell. michele
The Rawlings Renegade 11.5" Youth Baseball First Base Mitt: R115FBM is constructed from full grain leather. The leather grade and padding will be on the lower end to help make this mitt more game ready out of the box for a youth player, ages 12 and under.
Cameron
My son has an 11 1/2 inch left handed first base glove. He is 10 and playing select. He has played a whole season with this glove but still has balls “pop out” for a .600 playing percentage. The season before last he had a fielders glove without pop out issues. Is it a bad glove? Does it need further break in? Do I need a new glove? I wonder if the shape is right. Rachel
This Rawlings Renegade 11.5" Youth Baseball First Base Mitt: R115FBM would work better for a younger player. Would recommend looking into the Rawlings R9 ContoUR Fit 12" Youth Baseball First Base Mitt: R9FMU-17BT.
Cameron
What is the difference between R115FBM and R115FBB? Chuck
The difference between the Rawlings Renegade 11.5" Youth Baseball First Base Mitt: R115FBM & the prior model, the Rawlings Renegade 11.5" Youth First Base Mitt: R115FBB, is the v-cut hinge on the pinkie side of the mitt. This will allow for easier opening and closing of the mitt.

About the Brand

Rawlings is a major manufacturer of competitive team sports equipment and apparel for baseball, basketball, and football, as well as licensed MLB, NFL, and NCAA retail products. Rawlings is a major supplier to professional, collegiate, interscholastic, and amateur organizations worldwide, including the Official Baseball Supplier to Major League Baseball.

The first real innovation in glove making occurred in 1912 when Rawlings Sporting Goods Company introduced the "Sure Catch" glove, which was "endorsed by leading players all over the country." The Sure Catch was a one-piece glove with sewn-in finger channels and looked better suited for a duck's foot than a man's hand. Catchers' mitts used at the time were large and bulky with a single leather thong passing for a web.

In 1920, Bill Doak, a journeyman pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, approached Rawlings with an idea for improving the baseball glove from a mere protective device to a genuine aid in fielding. The "Bill Doak" model was so revolutionary that it stayed in Rawlings' line until 1953. Its key feature was a multi-thong web laced into the first finger and thumb, which created for the first time in baseball's young life, a natural pocket.

In 1925, Rawlings unveiled a three-fingered fielder's glove, and ten years later improved the Bill Doak model with a two-piece leather web. At the same time, the "T" web became a rage for first basemen's mitts. The pocket underwent a pronounced change in 1941 when the Trapper Mitt, also known as the Claw, appeared. The "Deep Well" pocket was so unique that Rawlings quickly patented it. The design was improved in 1950 by adding a leather piece across the top. Another significant creation occurred in 1948 with the three-fingered Playmaker. A five-fingered fielder's model, with all fingers laced together, provided greater pocket control.

The six-fingered Trap-Eze evolved in the 1960's. In more recent years, Rawlings produced the Fastback design, which gives a glove a snugger fit, greater extension, and overall control. The Holdster is a slot through which a finger can be extended for additional protection from impacts on the pocket. Then, there is the Edge-U-Cated Heel with its extended U-shaped lacing and the Pro H Web and much-copied Basket Web.

Some of Rawlings's more recent glove innovations also include the unique Spin-Stopper design which reduces ball spin when the ball hits the glove, and the Cantilever glove design feature that provides a cushioned area between the hand and the glove's palm area. In all, Rawlings has produced and patented more functionally innovative glove features and designs than that of any other glove manufacturer. The result is that the modern baseball glove is much larger, more comfortable, better padded, and made to last far longer than its ancestors. It is not uncommon to see today's Major League players wearing the same Rawlings glove they wore during their college playing days. In fact, Rawlings is the #1 glove in the major leagues. Rawlings maintains about 65 models of baseball and softball mitts and gloves in its line. The prototypes of virtually all of them have been field-tested by professionals before entering a sporting goods dealer's inventory.
