Description

New from Rawlings for the year The Gamer Youth Pro Taper series is the perfect choice for any younger athlete who is transitioning out of coach pitch and wants a pro-style baseball glove without having to use an adult glove. Constructed with a smaller hand opening and lowered finger stalls, the Youth Pro Taper is the perfect solution for smaller hands that haven't become full grown. Each glove is created with the newly developed, soft, full-grain leather shell that breaks in extremely quick while still maintaining quality and shape. This series, made after authentic professional patterns, displays nothing but the best in terms of features and materials. Leather reinforced palm and finger back linings increase protection so that worrying about stinging in the hands is a thing of the past. All of this is made possible by the Tennessee tanning rawhide leather laces that bring it all together and provide additional strength, structure, and long lasting durability. Pros: My 7 year old loves this glove. He plays mostly 2nd, but will even use it in the outfield. It wasn't very hard to break in either. The leather quality seems fine. I assume by time it wears out we will be shopping for a larger glove. This is also one of the gloves our local trainer said was great.

what's the difference from the 2017 Rawlings Gamer Youth Pro Taper 11" Baseball Glove: GYPT1-1B to Rawlings GG Gamer Mocha Pro Taper Series: G1100MO? baseball dad
Both the 2017 Rawlings Gamer Youth Pro Taper 11" Baseball Glove (GYPT1-1B) and the Rawlings GG Gamer Mocha Pro Taper Series (G1100MO) are going to be very similar gloves. One thing to keep in mind about the G1100MO is that the only one left we have of that is going to be a used glove. It is also going to come a little bit more broken in right from the factory. It is also going to have a V-Web while the GYPT1-1B is going to be a single post web.
Carter
How does this glove compare to the Akadema Prodigy Colby
The two are comparable as far as leather quality and break-in time. The 2017 Rawlings Gamer Youth Pro Taper 11" Baseball Glove: GYPT1-1B features a single post web and is best for infield use.

How is this glove in comparison to the Marucci 11" Geaux i-web? Leather quality, kid hand size etc....? Uncle Charlie
Both gloves are going to be using similar quality leather, and both are designed for youth hand size. The main differences are the web design, and the Marucci Geaux model comes with the breathable Air Mesh Back.

Would this glove be a good fit for a 10 yr old playing 2nd base? DAD
Based upon your player's age and position, I think the fitting of this 2017 Rawlings Gamer Youth Pro Taper 11" Baseball Glove (GYPT1-1B) and the 11" length will work well.
Ben
What size glove should I buy my 8 year old? He hasn't reached a point where he has an assigned position. I would like to buy a glove that he can use for the next couple of years. Pete
The 2017 Rawlings Gamer Youth Pro Taper 11'' Baseball Glove: GYPT1-1B would be a good option for your 8 year old. If you are too worried about the size being usable for multiple seasons I would look at getting the 11.25'' model.
Max
How does the Pro Taper 11 compare to the discontinued GPL 1100Y1 in terms of leather and overall quality? thanks. Dave
The leather is the same quality and the performance is the same. Both require a little break in period. the difference is in the look of the gloves and the webbing. The GPL had a closed webbing while the 2017 Rawlings Gamer Youth Pro Taper 11" Baseball Glove (GYPT1-1B) is a single post web.

How much does this glove weigh? We own the older model of this glove (GG110PTI) which is 20 oz - this feels a bit heavy for our 8 year old. For comparison, my 12 inch adult Rawlings glove weighs about 20 oz as well. Is this weight typical for 11 inch gloves with this quality of leather? If so, which gloves would you recommend of similar quality that weigh a bit less? Eric
The 2017 Rawlings Gamer Youth Pro Taper 11" Baseball Glove: GYPT1-1B will weigh roughly 17.7 ounces. As for the weight of the older model in comparison to other 11 inch youth gloves it would be tough to say what the "average" weight is.
Cameron
Can you compare this glove in terms of leather quality, hand sizing, break in with the Shoeless Joe Youth 10" glove? Matt
The size of the wrist opening and finger stalls should be very similar between the two models. The Shoeless Joe model should come more broken-in the the Rawlings Gamer Youth upon arrival. In terms of quality, I personally prefer the Rawlings Gamer series, but both are good youth options.

The 2017 Rawlings Gamer Youth Pro Taper 11" Baseball Glove: GYPT1-1B will weigh 18 ounces.

About the Brand

Rawlings is a major manufacturer of competitive team sports equipment and apparel for baseball, basketball, and football, as well as licensed MLB, NFL, and NCAA retail products. Rawlings is a major supplier to professional, collegiate, interscholastic, and amateur organizations worldwide, including the Official Baseball Supplier to Major League Baseball.

The first real innovation in glove making occurred in 1912 when Rawlings Sporting Goods Company introduced the "Sure Catch" glove, which was "endorsed by leading players all over the country." The Sure Catch was a one-piece glove with sewn-in finger channels and looked better suited for a duck's foot than a man's hand. Catchers' mitts used at the time were large and bulky with a single leather thong passing for a web.

In 1920, Bill Doak, a journeyman pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, approached Rawlings with an idea for improving the baseball glove from a mere protective device to a genuine aid in fielding. The "Bill Doak" model was so revolutionary that it stayed in Rawlings' line until 1953. Its key feature was a multi-thong web laced into the first finger and thumb, which created for the first time in baseball's young life, a natural pocket.

In 1925, Rawlings unveiled a three-fingered fielder's glove, and ten years later improved the Bill Doak model with a two-piece leather web. At the same time, the "T" web became a rage for first basemen's mitts. The pocket underwent a pronounced change in 1941 when the Trapper Mitt, also known as the Claw, appeared. The "Deep Well" pocket was so unique that Rawlings quickly patented it. The design was improved in 1950 by adding a leather piece across the top. Another significant creation occurred in 1948 with the three-fingered Playmaker. A five-fingered fielder's model, with all fingers laced together, provided greater pocket control.

The six-fingered Trap-Eze evolved in the 1960's. In more recent years, Rawlings produced the Fastback design, which gives a glove a snugger fit, greater extension, and overall control. The Holdster is a slot through which a finger can be extended for additional protection from impacts on the pocket. Then, there is the Edge-U-Cated Heel with its extended U-shaped lacing and the Pro H Web and much-copied Basket Web.

Some of Rawlings's more recent glove innovations also include the unique Spin-Stopper design which reduces ball spin when the ball hits the glove, and the Cantilever glove design feature that provides a cushioned area between the hand and the glove's palm area. In all, Rawlings has produced and patented more functionally innovative glove features and designs than that of any other glove manufacturer. The result is that the modern baseball glove is much larger, more comfortable, better padded, and made to last far longer than its ancestors. It is not uncommon to see today's Major League players wearing the same Rawlings glove they wore during their college playing days. In fact, Rawlings is the #1 glove in the major leagues. Rawlings maintains about 65 models of baseball and softball mitts and gloves in its line. The prototypes of virtually all of them have been field-tested by professionals before entering a sporting goods dealer's inventory.
