Questions and Answers
Have a question about the Louisville Slugger Omaha Flare First Base Mitt: FGOFBK5-FBM1? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

How wide is the mitt? The video makes it seem like you're holding a geisha fan. I'm looking for a similar glove to 1B Matt Adams of the St. Louis Cardinals.
1B Supreme
You would be able to shape the Louisville Slugger Omaha Flare First Base Mitt (FGOFBK5-FBM1) to provide a wider pocket than it would offer right out of the box. But Matt Adams currently uses the Rawlings Pro Preferred (PROSFMBRX). We no longer have that in stock, but the (PROSFMMO) would be pretty similar.
Mac
My 17 year old son has small hands, but weighs about 215 lbs. His coach preferred a 12.50" glove. Is there really much difference?
Baseball mom
If your son has smaller hands the Louisville Slugger Omaha Flare First Base Mitt (FGOFBK5-FBM1) at 13" might be too big. For a player with smaller hands a half inch is a pretty good difference. I would recommend sticking with either a 12.50" or 12.75" glove.
Jake
My glove hand is about 6 1/2 inches bottom of my palm to the tip of my pinky finger. Would this be a glove that fits all the way on my hand or would it leave a portion of the bottom of my palm exposed?
TW
With a 6 1/2 inch distance from the bottom of your wrist to the tip of your pinky, the very bottom of your palm will be exposed if you wear the Louisville Slugger Omaha Flare First Base Mitt (FGOFBK5-FBM1) regularly. However, if you wear the Omaha Flare First Base Mitt with two fingers in the pinky stall, a little less than half of your palm will be exposed.
Ben
Do this glove have padding in the palm and index finger?
LA ball
The Louisville Slugger Omaha Flare First Base Mitt (FGOFBK5-FBM1) has some padding in those areas but it is not an excessive amount of padding.
Patrick
Is the performance leather full grain?
doge

The Omaha Flare First Base Mitt uses performance leathers which offers players a quicker break-in period compared to other gloves/mitts made using top graded steerhide leather.

Is this a high quality mitt? Could it work for 3+ years of use?
AK
If taken care of, the Louisville Slugger Omaha Flare First Base Mitt (FGOFBK5-FBM1) should have no problem lasting that long.
Patrick
Which glove would you say has better leather quality: the LS Omaha Flare or the Rawlings GG Gamer First Base Mitt?
Noahsq
Both the Louisville Slugger Omaha Flare First Base Mitt: FGOFBK5-FBM1 and the Rawlings GG Gamer Series: GFM18GT First Base Mitt will feature high quality leather. The Rawlings GG Gamer will arrive a little bit more game ready and have less of a break-in period in comparison to this Omaha Flare.
John P.
Could this mitt work for softball as well?
DGZ
Yes, this Louisville Slugger Omaha Flare First Base Mitt (FGOFBK5-FBM1) will have a 13.00" length to it that should be able to handle a 12" circumference slow pitch softball.
In 1842, J. Frederick Hillerich emigrated with his family from Baden-Baden, Germany to the United States. Eight years before, the 1834 Book of Sports had made its debut as the nation's first publication covering baseball. But when he arrived in Baltimore, J. Frederick Hillerich would never have dreamed of the future impact his family would have on America's favorite pastime.
After a short while, the Hillerichs moved to Louisville, where J. Fred started a woodworking shop in 1856. Two of his sons, Adam and John Andrew "Bud" were born in the United States and would later join their father in his business. By 1864 "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning" was in operation and filled orders for businesses by custom-turning everything from balusters to bedposts.
The firm thrived, and by 1875 the little woodworking shop employed about 20 people. In 1880 Bud Hillerich, who was an amateur baseball player, became an apprentice in his father's shop. Young Bud made his own baseball bats along with bats for several of his teammates.
The debate over the origins of the first bat continues to generate controversy among baseball enthusiasts, but the younger Hillerich was most certainly involved in getting his father's business involved with what would become the company's signature item. According to company legend, the first bat was turned by Bud for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning in 1884. Browning was a star on Louisville's professional American Association team - the Eclipse. On a spring afternoon Bud, then seventeen, witnessed Browning break his favorite bat. Bud offered to make a bat for his hero, and Browning accepted. After the young wood shop apprentice lathed a quality stick from white ash, according to the story, Browning got three hits with it in the next game.
Louisville Slugger gloves are worn by more pitchers in Major League Baseball than any other glove.
