Perfect for the Young Catcher

Pros: Very good mitt for a beginning catcher. My son is not quite 8, but is beginning to learn to catch on his travel team. This mitt is perfect for him. The buffalo hide is soft enough that he was able to use the mitt the first day we received it, and has continued to break in nicely. It seems tough enough, though, that I'm certain it will hold up until long after he's outgrown it. It has plenty of padding to give him the confidence to hang in there, and the slightly deeper pocket enables him to keep the ball from bouncing out of his mitt, which frequently happens when kids begin using catcher's mitts. The mesh back lightens the glove up just enough so that he can manipulate it confidently, but the glove still has enough mass to make it feel solid when the ball hits it. Overall, very well designed and thought out beginners catchers mitt and at the price, an extremely good value! Can't imagine a better choice for a beginner's catchers mitt.

Pros: Well-stitched and adjustable to a hand size that fitted well to a 7 year-old grandson. Not sure how well it will stand up for the long haul but for a beginner's mitt it is a great one to start with.

Cons: Stiff, but really no more than normal.

Pros: I bought this glove for my son who is a left handed thrower and plays in the coach pitch division. He wanted to try catching and since receiving the glove has caught every game and he is gaining confidence. The glove provides great protection and he is actually catching the ball now in the glove from the machine. This is a great buy especially for the price and will last a few seasons. I recommend this product to anyone starting off catching.

Pros: The glove is lightweight enough for my 7-10 year old boys and it is still of adequate width. It was broken in within 3 days and are kids say it is light and comfortable. I would not use it for older than 12 or 13 year olds.

Cons: It does not have as much padding as an adult glove but it does not really need it. The interior of the mitt is Buffalo hide and the exterior is mostly a synthetic material, but this aids in the conservation of the glove weight. The Velcro strap is an unnecessary add on but not really a problem.

is this for fastpitch softball or a deeper pocket for baseball? jason
This is designed for a youth player. It's a great mitt for a young baseball player. It's pocket will also be large enough for a young fastpitch softball player.
Jeff
This is a youth baseball catcher's mitt. It would not be recommended for fastpitch.

My son is 10 and left handed. Is this available for him, and is it big enought to get 2-3 seasons out of it? Should I consider a little bigger? BMac
We suggest a 31.50" or 32.00" glove based on his glove. The bigger size will allow for some growth for a younger player.
Kara
I have a 6 year old that is catching for his coach pitch team. He is an excellent catcher for his age, but we can't seem to find a mitt that will fit his hand. Any suggestions? Randy Ballard
Most players at the coach pitch level won't benefit from a regular catcher's mitt. This is because catcher's mitts have much more padding than a regular fielder's glove and will be much harder to manipulate and close for a younger player. For a 6 year old, you'll probably want a mitt smaller than 30 inches. A mitt like the All Star CM100TM is a great option for young catchers.
Tyler
Is it a right handed glove.? Catcher

We need a size 11. 7bratden7
Catcher's Mitts are not available in 11.00". The smallest size is 30.00". We do have a fielder's glove in a 11.00"; Louisville Slugger Genesis 1884 Series: GENB1100 Youth.
Kara
Young developing catcher, will be nine next year. What about this for softball she will be playing with an 11" ball next two years but then move to 12 and I would like to find her one for about four years. To make things tougher she is a left handed thrower any suggestions? Matt
The Louisville GENYCM is designed with baseball in mind. It will have a larger than average pocket compared to most baseball catcher mitts, but a fastpitch softball player may find it difficult to handle a softball of 11 and especially 12 inches. If you want a mitt she can use for multiple years, I would recommend a fastpitch softball mitt around 31.5 or 32 inches. The All Star MVP Series: CMW1010BT and Glovesmith Select Series: SB2V2 would be two great options.
Tyler
What to know which mitt would be best for a beginning 9 year old catcher. The Louisville 1884 series or the Mizuno GXC112. Thank you. JJ
The Louisville Slugger Genesis 1884 Series: GENYCM Youth model will come in a 31" design. It will be very light weight and provide easy closure. The X-Trasoft Palm Lining and Game Ready Ultra Soft materials will provide an easy catching experience from day 1. This Mitt will be made from Top Grade Buffalo Leather. The Mizuno will come in a 31.50" design Two-Pieced Closed Web. Mizuno provides this glove with their V-Flex and PowerClose Technologies which allows for easy closure. This Mitt will also have the Butter Soft Lining for added comfort and durability. Both models would be great for a youth catcher. The Mizuno will require less of a break-in period.
Brandon

About the Brand

In 1842, J. Frederick Hillerich emigrated with his family from Baden-Baden, Germany to the United States. Eight years before, the 1834 Book of Sports had made its debut as the nation's first publication covering baseball. But when he arrived in Baltimore, J. Frederick Hillerich would never have dreamed of the future impact his family would have on America's favorite pastime.

After a short while, the Hillerichs moved to Louisville, where J. Fred started a woodworking shop in 1856. Two of his sons, Adam and John Andrew "Bud" were born in the United States and would later join their father in his business. By 1864 "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning" was in operation and filled orders for businesses by custom-turning everything from balusters to bedposts.

The firm thrived, and by 1875 the little woodworking shop employed about 20 people. In 1880 Bud Hillerich, who was an amateur baseball player, became an apprentice in his father's shop. Young Bud made his own baseball bats along with bats for several of his teammates.

The debate over the origins of the first bat continues to generate controversy among baseball enthusiasts, but the younger Hillerich was most certainly involved in getting his father's business involved with what would become the company's signature item. According to company legend, the first bat was turned by Bud for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning in 1884. Browning was a star on Louisville's professional American Association team - the Eclipse. On a spring afternoon Bud, then seventeen, witnessed Browning break his favorite bat. Bud offered to make a bat for his hero, and Browning accepted. After the young wood shop apprentice lathed a quality stick from white ash, according to the story, Browning got three hits with it in the next game.

Louisville Slugger gloves are worn by more pitchers in Major League Baseball than any other glove.
