first base glove brian fone Coach

Pros: My granddaughter loved it. But stitching around top of pocket became unraveled. But Just Ball Gloves came to the rescue with their great return policy and I will be getting a new one. I am sure this is an isolated event and wont happen to the new one.

Cons: Stitching around top of pocket un-raveled after two practices.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Rawlings Player Preferred 12.5" Baseball First Base Mitt: PFBDCT? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

Is this a suitable glove for a 16 year old high school player? Leo
Yes, the Rawlings Player Preferred 12.5" First Base Mitt: PFBDCT works for a high school player.
Jason
Is this glove suitable for softball? Could I use it since it is a 12.5" (or do I need a 13.00")? Dibs
Yes, I think this Rawlings Player Preferred 12.5" First Base Mitt (PFBDCT) could be used at first base for softball. Although, a 13.00" length mitt would provide a little more catching area, the 12.5" length should still be serviceable for use.
Ben
Is this glove too big for an 11U first basemen? Monte
This Rawlings Player Preferred 12.5" First Base Mitt (PFBDCT) is recommended for adult players. It will most likely be too large for an 11U player.
mick
Is this good for a 7th grader that is pretty big? cedarius ingram
Glove sizing is extremely dependent on the player's hand size. With that being said, a 12.50" glove would be an above average size first baseman's glove for a 7th grader. Therefore if the player is larger, this Rawlings Player Preferred 12.5" First Base Mitt: PFBDCT potentially could be a great fit.
Tyler
Would this be a good glove for a high school freshman playing fast pitch softball? Philip
This Rawlings Player Preferred 12.5" First Base Mitt (PFBDCT) is designed as a baseball glove. However, due to the tighter fitting and the 12.5" length, I think this will work just fine for a fastpitch player as a freshman in high school.
Ben
What is the break in period for this glove? Is it basically ready out of the box? lap
Break in can vary on a glove from one person to the next based on the amount of use. The best way to break in the Rawlings Player Preferred 12.5" First Base Mitt: PFBDCT would be to play catch and use small amount of glove oil/conditioner to soften the leather. This mitt would most likely take 2-3 weeks to get game ready.
Cameron
I know they are pretty comparable but if you had to choose, which glove would you say is more game ready, this glove or the Sandlot series first base mitt? matt
The Rawlings Player Preferred 12.5" First Base Mitt: PFBDCT will be very similar to the Rawlings Sandlot Series 12.5" First Base Mitt: SFM18 in terms of game readiness. The Sandlot series will be slightly more game ready out of the box but would not venture to say the Player Preferred series would take any longer to break in.
Cameron
Is this pigskin or not? Noor Iskandar
This Rawlings Player Preferred 12.5" First Base Mitt (PFBDCT) is made of full-grain leather. The full grain leather is not particularly high-quality, but the glove is not going to be made of pigskin leather.
Ben
What's the difference between this and the renegade? I'm an adult and play in an organized league. Want something good but can't afford hoh or properferred. Davy
The Rawlings Player Preferred 12.5" First Base Mitt: PFBDCT and the Renegade will the pattern design of the glove. The Renegade will also need less break in. If you play more competitively, I would probably recommend the Rawlings Player Preferred 12.5" First Base Mitt: PFBDCT.
Tori
Is this a good glove for a high school 1st baseman? Jermaine
Yes, the Rawlings Player Preferred 12.5" First Base Mitt: PFBDCT would work for a high school player.
Tori
Will this be too big for a 13 year old girl? She is tall and has fairly large hands, and also very experienced at first base. brian
This Rawlings Player Preferred 12.5" (PFBDCT) glove should work just fine if they have larger hands. We do have our 100 day return policy with gloves, so you can always try it out for a bit to see if it works for you before sending it back if it doesn't work out.
Kyle
Can this glove be used in men's slowpitch softball? Andrew
Yes, the Rawlings Player Preferred 12.5" First Base Mitt: PFBDCT should work well for men's slowpitch softball.
Cameron
Where does this glove go If you were working in order from rop of the line to beginners glove? Example would be HOH being the top, R9 would be below and so on. Thanks. Larry
The Rawlings Player Preferred 12.5" Baseball First Base Mitt: PFBDCT would be more towards the beginers side of the spectrum. This glove will feature a fairly easy break in period, which appeals more towards the beginers. This glove still contains full grain, high quality leather, just not quite the top not materials used in the Pro Preferred or HOH series.

About the Brand

Rawlings is a major manufacturer of competitive team sports equipment and apparel for baseball, basketball, and football, as well as licensed MLB, NFL, and NCAA retail products. Rawlings is a major supplier to professional, collegiate, interscholastic, and amateur organizations worldwide, including the Official Baseball Supplier to Major League Baseball.

The first real innovation in glove making occurred in 1912 when Rawlings Sporting Goods Company introduced the "Sure Catch" glove, which was "endorsed by leading players all over the country." The Sure Catch was a one-piece glove with sewn-in finger channels and looked better suited for a duck's foot than a man's hand. Catchers' mitts used at the time were large and bulky with a single leather thong passing for a web.

In 1920, Bill Doak, a journeyman pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, approached Rawlings with an idea for improving the baseball glove from a mere protective device to a genuine aid in fielding. The "Bill Doak" model was so revolutionary that it stayed in Rawlings' line until 1953. Its key feature was a multi-thong web laced into the first finger and thumb, which created for the first time in baseball's young life, a natural pocket.

In 1925, Rawlings unveiled a three-fingered fielder's glove, and ten years later improved the Bill Doak model with a two-piece leather web. At the same time, the "T" web became a rage for first basemen's mitts. The pocket underwent a pronounced change in 1941 when the Trapper Mitt, also known as the Claw, appeared. The "Deep Well" pocket was so unique that Rawlings quickly patented it. The design was improved in 1950 by adding a leather piece across the top. Another significant creation occurred in 1948 with the three-fingered Playmaker. A five-fingered fielder's model, with all fingers laced together, provided greater pocket control.

The six-fingered Trap-Eze evolved in the 1960's. In more recent years, Rawlings produced the Fastback design, which gives a glove a snugger fit, greater extension, and overall control. The Holdster is a slot through which a finger can be extended for additional protection from impacts on the pocket. Then, there is the Edge-U-Cated Heel with its extended U-shaped lacing and the Pro H Web and much-copied Basket Web.

Some of Rawlings's more recent glove innovations also include the unique Spin-Stopper design which reduces ball spin when the ball hits the glove, and the Cantilever glove design feature that provides a cushioned area between the hand and the glove's palm area. In all, Rawlings has produced and patented more functionally innovative glove features and designs than that of any other glove manufacturer. The result is that the modern baseball glove is much larger, more comfortable, better padded, and made to last far longer than its ancestors. It is not uncommon to see today's Major League players wearing the same Rawlings glove they wore during their college playing days. In fact, Rawlings is the #1 glove in the major leagues. Rawlings maintains about 65 models of baseball and softball mitts and gloves in its line. The prototypes of virtually all of them have been field-tested by professionals before entering a sporting goods dealer's inventory.
