Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Rawlings Heart of the Hide Series: PRO205-4C? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

(1) What kind of pocket does this glove have (I play SS and pitch)? (2) How long to break in? Mike
(1) The pocket of this 2016 Rawlings Heart of the Hide Series (PRO205-4C) will be deep enough to meet the expectations of a shortstop/pitcher. (2) A good break-in of this glove (to get it game-ready) will take about 2-3 weeks in length in my opinion. That break-in would require daily use in addition to practice use.
Ben
My son is normally an infielder (SS or 3rd ). He is 10 yrs old and plays tourney ball. Is the 11.75 too big should we go with an 11.50? jimmyz baseball
The 2016 Rawlings Heart of the Hide Series: PRO205-4C is an 11.75 inch pattern that would be a great fit for a 3B. Typically, most middle infielders will use an 11.25 inch to 11.50 inch pattern. As for the 2016 Rawlings Heart of the Hide Series: PRO205-4C itself, this glove may fit too loose for a 10 year old and will certainly take some time to break-in.
Cameron
is this a good glove for a college pitcher? Owen
The 2016 Rawlings Heart of the Hide Series (PRO205-4C) is a great option for any pitcher, even at the college level.
Carter
Would this glove be a good option for a guy who plays second base, pitcher, and outfield. If not could you please recommend a different glove? beastmode
The 2016 Rawlings Heart of the Hide Series (PRO205-4C) is a great utility option that would work well for 2nd base, pitching, and outfield.
Carter
Is this a good glove for middle infielders and outfielders? I play both but as a high schooler I'm not sure if it's too small for the outfield. Thanks Nate
The 2016 Rawlings Heart of the Hide Series: PRO205-4C would be a good option for you. This glove is very versatile and with that 11.75'' you will be able to play infield and outfield.
Max
I am a pretty versatile player and I play a lot of positions (3rd, outfield and some middle infield). Is this too small for outfield or too big for other positions on the field? Glenn
If you were wanting to purchase one glove for use at all the positions listed, this Rawlings Heart of the Hide Series (PRO205-4C) could work due to its 11.75" length. Some might say this is too large for middle infield and others will say it is too small for outfield, but if you were shooting to get a glove to move through all the positions, this glove would have a chance to fit your needs (and prevent the purchase of multiple gloves). I would note that we do have a 100 day guarantee on all our mitts. That guarantee allows customers to purchase a glove and use it, then if within 100 days of the purchase they decide that the glove is not to their liking they can send it back to us for a full refund or exchange. Ultimately, you would risk no money if you wanted to just tryout this glove!
Ben
Is this glove big on the hand? jack wilder
The Rawlings Heart of the Hide Series: PRO205-4C is made with an adult male's hand in mind. It will run very similarly to other 11.75" gloves on the market.
Tyler
Can the Rawlings Heart of the Hide Series (PRO205-4C) be used for third base? jack
Yes, the Rawlings Heart of the Hide Series (PRO205-4C) can be used for third base.
Damon
Does it come in a lefty? Nick
The Rawlings Heart of the Hide Series: PRO205-4C was made in a LHT but we have sold out of this option. With this glove being a closeout model, we will no longer receive LHT models from Rawlings.

About the Brand

Rawlings is a major manufacturer of competitive team sports equipment and apparel for baseball, basketball, and football, as well as licensed MLB, NFL, and NCAA retail products. Rawlings is a major supplier to professional, collegiate, interscholastic, and amateur organizations worldwide, including the Official Baseball Supplier to Major League Baseball.

The first real innovation in glove making occurred in 1912 when Rawlings Sporting Goods Company introduced the "Sure Catch" glove, which was "endorsed by leading players all over the country." The Sure Catch was a one-piece glove with sewn-in finger channels and looked better suited for a duck's foot than a man's hand. Catchers' mitts used at the time were large and bulky with a single leather thong passing for a web.

In 1920, Bill Doak, a journeyman pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, approached Rawlings with an idea for improving the baseball glove from a mere protective device to a genuine aid in fielding. The "Bill Doak" model was so revolutionary that it stayed in Rawlings' line until 1953. Its key feature was a multi-thong web laced into the first finger and thumb, which created for the first time in baseball's young life, a natural pocket.

In 1925, Rawlings unveiled a three-fingered fielder's glove, and ten years later improved the Bill Doak model with a two-piece leather web. At the same time, the "T" web became a rage for first basemen's mitts. The pocket underwent a pronounced change in 1941 when the Trapper Mitt, also known as the Claw, appeared. The "Deep Well" pocket was so unique that Rawlings quickly patented it. The design was improved in 1950 by adding a leather piece across the top. Another significant creation occurred in 1948 with the three-fingered Playmaker. A five-fingered fielder's model, with all fingers laced together, provided greater pocket control.

The six-fingered Trap-Eze evolved in the 1960's. In more recent years, Rawlings produced the Fastback design, which gives a glove a snugger fit, greater extension, and overall control. The Holdster is a slot through which a finger can be extended for additional protection from impacts on the pocket. Then, there is the Edge-U-Cated Heel with its extended U-shaped lacing and the Pro H Web and much-copied Basket Web.

Some of Rawlings's more recent glove innovations also include the unique Spin-Stopper design which reduces ball spin when the ball hits the glove, and the Cantilever glove design feature that provides a cushioned area between the hand and the glove's palm area. In all, Rawlings has produced and patented more functionally innovative glove features and designs than that of any other glove manufacturer. The result is that the modern baseball glove is much larger, more comfortable, better padded, and made to last far longer than its ancestors. It is not uncommon to see today's Major League players wearing the same Rawlings glove they wore during their college playing days. In fact, Rawlings is the #1 glove in the major leagues. Rawlings maintains about 65 models of baseball and softball mitts and gloves in its line. The prototypes of virtually all of them have been field-tested by professionals before entering a sporting goods dealer's inventory.
