Best glove I’ve ever bought Chris Coach

Pros: The leather and quality is top notch. Bought for my 9 year old for Christmas. It’s a little big on him. But he should be able to use this glove 2-3 more years if not more. He loves it. Still breaking it in. But the process is going a lot quicker then other gloves we’ve broken in.

Cons: None

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Nokona Alpha Select Series Baseball Glove: S-222 Youth? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

Would this be an appropriate glove for a 10U travel baseball player playing outfield? Bob
The 2016 Nokona Alpha Select Series Baseball Glove: S-222 Youth is an outfield pattern and would be perfect for a 10U travel baseball player who is in the outfield.
John P.
Is this glove the size I need for an 8 year who old plays pitcher, outfield and some infield? tim
This 2016 Nokona Alpha Select Series Baseball Glove (S-222 Youth) will have a youth fitting that should fit an 8 year old pretty well. The approximate 11.75" length on this glove might be a little larger than what most other 8 year olds will be using (I would guess most players at that age would be using gloves with a 10.00" - 11.00" length), however, that longer 11.75" length would definitely give your player something into which he could grow with time.

My son is 10 years old and is starting to outgrow his Alpha Select S-200, but the Nokona SV17 (12") is a little too big. Would the 11.75 S-222 be more appropriate? Is there a 11.50 in model? ghataa
To meet the needs of your player, I would say that at the current time I would recommend this 2016 Nokona Alpha Select Series Baseball Glove (S-222 Youth) as it will be larger than his current 11.25" model, but not quite to the 12.00" length (unfortunately, Nokona does not make an exact 11.5" length mitt for youth players). The 11.75" length and youth fitting on the S-222 will make it an excellent glove for your player at 10 years old.
Ben
My son currently uses a glove that is 11.25", but it has no pocket. He is about to turn 7 years old and plays outfield, first and third. Would this be to large? Tyler Slack
At the outset, I bet that the 11.75" length on this 2016 Nokona Alpha Select Series Baseball Glove (S-222 Youth) may be a little large for a 7 year old player. However, if you were wanting something into which he could grow with time, this would definitely be an option to consider. As well, I would note that here at JustBallGloves, we do have a 100 day guarantee on all our gloves that allows customers to purchase a glove and use it, then if within 100 days of the purchase they decide that the glove is not to their liking they can send it back to us for a full refund or exchange. Ultimately you would risk no money if you just wanted to try out this glove!

Apologies as I feel this has been asked in certain forms already. My son will be 12; he's just shy of 5 feet, weighs 100 lbs and has average size hands. He will play 2nd, OF and pitch this season and we are looking for a high quality, utility type glove. Please let me know where we should be from a sizing perspective. Marc B
The 2016 Nokona Alpha Select Series Baseball Glove: S-222 Youth would be a good choice for a utility glove. We usually advise 11.5"-11.75" sizes for middle infielders, 12.5"-13" for outfielders, and 12" for pitchers.

Why do some versions of the S-222 show a buckle at the wrist for tightening and some don't? Are there multiple versions of the S-222 glove? The glove shown on Amazon for example that is sold by justballgloves does not show the strap. dakine
The models of the 2016 Nokona Alpha Select Series Baseball Glove: S-222 Youth sold by justballgloves will have the buckle feature. Items listed on Amazon can be sold by multiple retailers and the product image is often controlled by Amazon themselves. It seems that the product image for this glove listed on Amazon is an older model.

My daughter is 9 years old she plays on a traveling fastpitch 8U team. Since the softballs are bigger than baseballs should we go with the 11.75" glove or the 11.25" glove (she plays in the outfield and pitcher)? I was either looking at this glove, the SV1 or S200. What should I get? Is there a difference in a youth glove and an adult glove? Na
For fastpitch softball, I am thinking that this 2016 Nokona Alpha Select Series Baseball Glove (S-222 Youth) should work well for the player. It has the smaller fitting for her hand, but the 11.75" will give room for a softball. This glove is technically a "baseball" glove, but it does have a "Youth" noting on it which means that the fit will be best for a young player (baseball or softball player).
Ben
How durable is buckle used to tighten the glove at the wrist and does it loosen while your playing position? RC
The loop used to tighten the wrist opening on this 2016 Nokona Alpha Select Series Baseball Glove (S-222 Youth) should be pretty durable (I have not heard of any issues with quality). As well, I do not hear many complaints about unintentional loosening at the wrist from this glove or any other mitts that feature that same style of wrist tightening system.
Ben
How stiff is this glove? I'm looking for a super soft leather glove that is not stiff and factory broken in. Brian
The Nokona Alpha Select Series Baseball Glove: S-222 Youth does have a broken in feel. I would say this is a good fit for what you are looking for.
Max
My son will be 10 this spring season and he is 4'4" and about 60-65 lbs. Would this be a good glove for him? He currently has an Akadema AZR 95 11" but he is growing out of it. CS
The typical 10 year old uses an 11.5" mitt. A 12" mitt can be used, but the fit may be a little big and make it harder to close. If that is the case, you can always return the mitt within 100 days for a full refund or return.

My 10 almost 11 year old son is in need of a new outfield glove. He plays year round and is pretty much on the field everyday so he needs a good quality glove. He plays center field. What glove would you suggest and what size? i was thinking a 12? Also he is a lefty. Thank you for your help. AW
Based off the information you've provided, I would recommend a 12 inch glove. The Nokona Alpha Select Series Baseball Glove: S-222 Youth would be a little snug because it is a youth glove. I would recommend the Nokona Walnut Series Baseball Glove: W-1200.
Dan
My son is currently 8 and starting to play more. He currently has an 11.5" Rawlings Highlight Series. I would like to get him a better glove that will last a couple years. I'm not sure if I should stay with an 11.5" or go with a 12". He tried on a couple and said the hand opening was too big. We are looking for a good recommendation. 9u baseball
At your player's age, I wouldn't recommend going up to a 12" size quite yet. 11.5" would be large enough to last a few years, and will allow him more control of the glove. One I would suggest would be the Nokona Alpha Select Series Baseball Glove: S-200 Youth.

About the Brand

Joe Phillips writes about his visit to Nokona. It was like sitting in at the plantation party in Gone with the Wind or maybe gazing from the grandstand at the “Field of Dreams” while the Black Sox players tried to work out their idled muscle kinks. And, I was gently reminded by the lines in that movie while I dug into a delicious plate of North Texas barbecue: “threshing crews eating at outdoor tables. It continually reminds us of what once was, like an Indian-head penny in a handful of new coins. . . You talk a good dream.” And here I was. . . graciously invited into this magical and charming “Field of Glove-Making Dreams” in former Comanche Indian land at Nocona, Texas. It was a warm August evening, basked in a golden harvest moon, while friends and the Nokona family paid its kindly southern regards to two of their own and two of America’s finest but relatively obscure glove makers, Bobby Storey and Elvin Ray “Ab” Lemons. You see, the pair had just completed fifty years of time-honored employment with Nocona Athletic Goods, the last of the all-American made ball glove company's. The occasion brought echoes of past successes and human contentment, but in Nocona today you still experience much the same American texture of yesterday and perhaps a glimpse into tomorrow as well.

The two stately gentlemen were being honored in a way that could have taken place in the same manner when they first reported for full-time work at Nokona, in 1952, or back even earlier, in 1933 when the company started making sports equipment. During a brief and informal presentation at the celebration, Nokona’s new sales manager called the two glove makers “Legends - because that’s what their ball gloves stood for, American know-how and pride taken in a best-made product.”

A man of few words but a marveled craftsman who could literally conjure a sows ear into a playable baseball mitt, Mr. Lemons got up and fondly recalled the several men he worked with through his half-century and of the training that had been passed along to him from his old bosses.

His counter part and just as talented, Bobby Storey, had filled in at just about every job at Nokona. Bobby, the son of the sporting goods founder, R.E. “Bob” Storey had most recently served as president and now chairman of the board of Nokona. Though past retirement age like Mr. Lemons, he’s now serving at one of his favorite roles, that of ball glove designer.

At a time for employment in this country when five years is considered a long tenure with the same company, Ab and Bobby are not even the first to complete a half-century journey with Nocona Athletics. The now deceased Jewell Brickey, hit that milestone in 1993, after joining the company during World War II. That’s the kind of devotion that employees forge into this glove-making outfit. A devoted and sustained tenure here is not rare. Last year the company advertising, displayed along with Storey and Lemons, three other employees who had garnered 40 years with Nokona, Warren Clary, Bud Meekins, and Melvin Weedin.“

I don’t have to tell you that the one constant through all the years has been baseball”, wrote W.P. Kinsella. And the most constant of ball glove makers has been Nokona, and the men and women there who keep alive the tradition of American craftsmanship of ball glove making. The spirit of glove-making is still alive and well in Nocona, Texas.
